The Roanoke Colony, later known as the Lost Colony, was established
by the Kingdom of England in the late 16th century. It was located in
what is now Dare County, North Carolina. The colony's foundation was
an attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to gain a permanent English
settlement in North America.
The colonization attempt was originally funded and organized by Sir
Humphrey Gilbert, but he later drowned in 1583 while aborting an
attempt to colonize St. John's in Newfoundland. After Sir Gilbert's
death, Elizabeth I granted the charter to Sir Walter Raleigh.

On March 25, 1584, Elizabeth I granted Raleigh a
charter for the colonization of North America. If he
decided not to colonize, he would lose his right to do
so.
Both Queen Elizabeth and Raleigh intended that by
colonizing North America, they would receive endless
riches in resources and the ability to launch privateers
from the colony in order to conduct raids against the
Spanish treasure armadas.

On April 27, 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh sent out an
expedition squad consisting of Philip Amadas and Arthur
Barlowe to explore the east coast of North America.
They soon discovered Roanoke Island on July 4 of the same
year. They were able to establish relations with the local
Native Americans, the Secotans and the Croatoans. By
gathering information from the natives on the politics and
geography of Roanoke, Raleigh was able to organize a
second expedition to the area. This was led by Sir Richard
Grenville.

The second expedition set out on April 9, 1585 from England. Their
ship ran aground once they reached the Ocracoke Inlet near the
proposed position of the colony on Roanoke Island. However, the
food preserves in the ship's hull were mostly ruined because of the
water leaking in from damage.
Despite this lack of food, Grenville decided to leave around 108
men to form a new colony on the north end of Roanoke Island.
Grenville promised to return to the colony by April 1586 with more
men and more supplies. However, Grenville's return did not come
by April 1586. Soon after, Sir Francis Drake, an admiral in the
British navy, stopped at the colony and offered to return the
colonizers to England, which many accepted.
