Once upon a time there lived an old king, in a kingdom beyond the sea. For many
years he had reigned over his lands, and his people knew peace and happiness. The
king had three daughters: three girls who loved him very much and would do
everything for their father.
One day, the king called his daughters to him. “My dear girls,” he said, “I am
becoming quite the old man, and I think I’ve had the crown for long enough now. It
is time for you to take my place on the throne. I will give each of you a part of the
kingdom, and to help me decide how big your part will be, you just have to tell me
exactly how much you love me."
The first daughter immediately stepped forward. “I love you so very much, daddy,”
she exclaimed. “My love is as deep as the deepest lake of the land, and as high as
the highest tower of the castle!”
The king smiled, and listened as his second daughter came towards him. “I love you
so very much, daddy,” she started. “My love is as deep as the ocean and as tall as
the tallest mountain in the land!”

The smile on the king’s face grew wider as he awaited his youngest daughter’s
response. He would never admit it, but secretly she was his favourite daughter.
She had never known her mother, since she had died shortly after her birth. Thus
the king had always felt the most responsible for this sweet little girl. (Although
he of course loved all his daughters very much!)
“I love you very much, daddy,” she began. “But I know no words to tell you this.”
It was as if everyone had suddenly lost their tongue. The king’s smile had
disappeared, and nobody dared to utter a single word. Suddenly he stood up and
shouted: “Are you saying you do not love me?! I had expected more from you!
You get nothing at all, get out!”
And the youngest daughter, too scared to cross her father, left the castle.

As promised, the king divided his land amongst his two remaining daughters. He
would still stay with them in the castle, but from now on they would wear the
crown. For a time all went well: the girls continued to rule as their father had done
before them.
After a couple of weeks however, the two new queens started to abuse the power
they had been given: the first daughter, who had always prepared the most
delicious meals for her father, started to pour heaps of salt onto his food, so he
would not enjoy one bite of it. And the second girl, who had always made sure her
father’s clothes were clean and soft, now purposefully washed his favourite robes
with her own dresses, so that they became a popping princessy-pink instead of the
bright white they had been before.
For a week the old king ate the horrible food and wore his ruined clothes. And it
wasn’t long before had had enough of it. He tried talking to his daughters about it,
but they only laughed at their father.
“We are the queens now! And you are our servant,” they mocked him. “And if you
don’t like it then you can leave right now!”
The old king had realized the terrible mistake he had made abandoning his
youngest daughter in favour of his other two girls: they had shown what they
were really like, and it was clear that they did not love their father as they had
told him before.
That night, the old king left the castle as well.
Meanwhile, the youngest daughter had been wandering the land ever since her
father had ordered her to leave. Wherever she went, her natural kindness and
sincerity earned her the love and affection of all the people she met. Numerous
times they offered her to stay with them as part of their families, but every time
she politely refused: she was still too heartbroken. The only thing she really
wanted was to return to her father and earn his love again.
So it happened that one night, she stumbled upon an old man. She noticed him
immediately, as he was wearing a bright pink shirt. As she watched closely, she
recognized the old man as her father.
