Once upon a time in the Himalaya Mountains there was a hungry snow leopard named Dumon. He lived with his twin brother Byron in a mountain cave in the Taiga.

The Taiga biome is very cold and has lots of trees but few plants due to the extremely cold weather. In the winter time the temperature can be around -65° F with a lot of snow. In the summer the temperature can get as low as 20° F and the high can be 70° F.

The summers are mostly warm, rainy and humid. Dumon and Byron love the coldness in the mountains and summer is their favorite time because all of the animals are out and not hibernating.

One morning Dumon and Byron are very hungry and go searching for food. Dumon saw plenty of goats on a nearby farm. Then Dumon and Byron went into the area where the goats were. The goats started making noise, “Baaaa!” Homer, the mean farmer, runs outside when he hears the noise.
“Baaaa!”

Homer thinks the leopards are going to eat his goats. He runs inside to get his rifle and comes out shooting! Homer is very angry because he has already lost 3 goats to hungry predators that can’t find food.

Many snow leopards have disappeared from the Taiga because humans are moving into the mountains more and more. They are cutting down trees and taking over their habitat where they have homes. Humans are also scaring away the small animals that leopards usually eat. Without homes and food, the leopards are dying off quickly. Dumon and Byron are the only ones left from a family of 8, the rest have died or been killed by angry farmers or people that want to sell the leopards’ bones and parts for medicine.
