Rueful (Adjective) pg. 154-

Feeling or expressing pain or sorrow for sins or offenses.

"The Giver gave a rueful, anguished, empty laugh."

He gave me a rueful look, I could see the tears fill his eyes.

Augmented (Verb) pg. 168-

Added to or made greater in amount of number or strength.

"The journey had become automatic: sleep by day, hidden underbrush, and tress; the finding of water; the careful division of scraps of food augmented by what he could find in the fields.

Other states showed a largely augmented product.

Contorted (Adjective) pg. 118-

Twisted especially as in pain or struggle.

"The Giver looked up at him, his face contorted with suffering."

Hot pain slid through him as his body contorted into a new form.

Lethargy (Noun) pg. 176/177-

Weakness character by a lack of vitality or energy.

"Warning himself ever so briefly had shaken away the lethargy and resignation and restored his will to survive."

Very large doses in animals cause lethargy, collapse, and death.

Emphatically (Adverb) pg. 157-

Without question or beyond.

"Jonas shook his head emphatically."

But he disposes of his doubt in a very emphatic and significant manner.
