A is for agriculture <3


Agriculture, forestry, and fishing , important resources in the New Jersey colony. They used to shift jobs and take turns farming too. Sense they had great soil they used it responsibly .

B is for Boycott


Colonist argued that taxes should not be pressed because the had no representatives in Parliament to speak for their rights. Protest and a boycott against British goods eventually convinced Parliament to the end in the stamp act in 1766

C is for Clan woman tools
Clan women controlled their own property. Back then they didn't know how to make mental tools. Instead they used animal bones and rocks to make tools. Basically Clan women made tools to protect them and their own property.

D is for Delaware river

The Dutch company called the Dutch West India Company built trading post along the Delaware River in the 1620s. They used it to trade exports with settlers in Europe.

F is for founded in...

1664
The first "owners" of The New Jersey colony were the Dutch. In 1664 the British took control over the colony. Sense people weren't to sure who founded it first but the British took control and lived their after their took control of the colony.

E is for Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh


The story of Elizabeth- Elizabeth's father John Haddon had bought land in 1698 but he had gotten sick and died. All of his land went to her , she had only been 21 though. She had gotten married and still took care of her fathers land, as a women that was a important part of history for women to own that much land!

G is for the Great awaking

Many conflicts came along with new governors. Feelings grew around 1720-1730s. This religious movement was called The Great Awaking. At that time everyone knew every ones business, and the news spread quickly. The government just wasn't working.

I is for Independence

New Jersey had one of the best roads. Ferries brought goods across rivers to sell. People in jail had people breaking them out so they could help farm for free markets for ferries.

H is for History

History meaning the name. New Jersey was named for the Channel Island of Jersey in honor of Sir George Carteret (one of the two men to whom the land was originally given). New Jersey was the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1789 and the first state to sign the Bill of Rights.

J is for the Jersey island


The Jersey island was a battle place. They had many wars there, in this image is one t the end.

K is for King Charles ll

Charles, the son of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, was born in 1630. As Prince of Wales during the Civil War, Charles was placed in charge of the west of England and took part in the Battle of Edgehill in 1642.
After the defeat of the Royalist forces Charles went into exile to the Isles of Scilly. Later he lived in Jersey and France. In 1649 Charles was proclaimed king of Scotland. He arrived in Edinburgh but after military defeats at Dunbar and Worcester, he was forced to flee to France. He later came back to New Jersey, and came the land to his friends.

L is for William Livingston

William Livingston was a lawyer and once a newspaper owner. He became governor in 1776. He served in the Continental Congress and the militia. He changed the whole colony in a good way.

M is for Massachusetts

Patriots in New Jersey stole and burned British tea in the town square in December 1774. British troops and Massachusetts militia clashed west of Boston the following April though.

N is for Native Americans

The region we call New Jersey was home to the Lenni- Lenape people in the people in the 1500s. These native americans lived in clans of related families. They were very skilled too.

O is for occupations (or jobs)

New Jersey had about 60 towns in the mid 1700s. Which meant a lot of people had jobs for them to have that many towns. Trained tradesmen worked as barrel makers, carpenters, and millers in towns. Others made pottery too. People even cut wood for jobs and some worked in coal mines too.

P is for Patriots

Patriots are colonist opposed to Great Britain. Patriots protested by tossing British tea into Boston Harbor in December 1773. Patriots believed in war unlike Quakers who wanted peace in the world.
