A liquid called plasma (the first component) makes up about half of the content of blood. Plasma contains proteins that help blood to clot, transport substances through the blood. Plasma itself is made up of 91.5% water. It acts as a solvent for important proteins, nutrients, electrolytes, gases, and other substances essential to life. Blood plasma also contains glucose and dissolved nutrients.
