Once upon a time many, many years ago . . . a little girl named Shirley Chisholm was born. Shirley was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 30, 1924. Shirley was a very smart girl. Soon, Shirley grew up and became a teacher for elementary school children just like you!

As she grew, Shirley's love for children continued! After teaching elementary school children, she became the leader of a big child care center for many years. Next she became an educator of child welfare in New York City! Shirley used her education to help all children!

In 1968, Shirley made history! She became the United States first African-American congresswoman! She served seven terms as a congresswoman in the House of Representatives! At first, she was assigned to the House Forestry Committee. But, Shirley was not scared to demand to be reassigned!

Shirley was then placed on the Veterans' Affairs Committee. Finally, she graduated all the way to the Education and Labor Committee! Shirley never let anything get in her way! She achieved so much through education, for an African-American woman of her time!
