Once Upon a Time.......
It was a sunny day when Sam the Sun sent Terry the Tree his sunlight.
"Good morning sun!" shouted the tree in joy.
"Thank you so much for the light!"
"It is my pleasure," said the sun. "to get life going on, we must all work together as a team."

And so Terry the Tree used all his might and absorbed all the sunny rays of Sam the Sun.
Here, Terry the Tree would begin his adventure of Photosynthesis!
5

6
WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS?
Photosynthesis is the process in which plants make their own food!
Plants are called autotrophs, they are organisms that can make their own food.
To make food plants need 3 very important things:
Water
Carbon Dioxide
Sunlight
7

8
My adventure of photosynthesis happens in my leaves.
In my leaves, there are very small cells, and in those cells, there are teeny tiny structures called chloroplasts!
Each chloroplast has its own green chemical called chlorophyll. This pigment is what gives the plants a green color!

9

10
The chloroplasts within me are VERY important in my photosynthesis journey. They're basically the food producers in my cells.
Within the chloroplast, there are 2 membranes. We call them the inner and outer membranes. The inner membrane surrounds the stroma and the thylakoids.
Molecules of chlorophyll sit on the surface of each thylakoid, and capture the light energy from the sun!

11

12
When Sam the Sun is out and shines her bright light to Terry the Tree, light dependent reactions happen.
In this reaction, the light energy is converted to chemical energy!
The chlorophyll absorbs some good energy from the sunlight that the sun gives off.
Then, water is used to provide electrons and hydrogen ions and also produces oxygen!
The electrons and hydrogen ions are then used to make ATP and NADPH. ATP is an energy storage molecule, while NADPH is an electron carrier.
Both ATP and NADPH are very important for the next stage of photosynthesis! Which is........
13

14
LIGHT INDEPENDENT REACTION!
After Sam the Sun goes away, light independent reaction occurs.
This process uses the ATP and NADPH we got from the last stage, which is the light dependent reaction.
Carbon dioxide and energy from ATP along with NADPH are then used to make..
GLUCOSE, which is sugar!
15

16
After that, Terry the Tree is able to successfully complete his adventure of photosynthesis. With the help of Sam the Sun, carbon dioxide, and water, Terry the Tree was able to make glucose and oxygen (he was able to make food!)
This is the wonderful story of photosynthesis, and why it's important
to nature.
