One bitterly cold Lent, near Ennis, grain to make bread with was becoming scarce. Brigid and her nuns were growing worried. What would they eat?
The nuns owned four fine chestnut Horses, which they kept in cosy warm stables near where they lived.
Late one night the nuns woke Brigid up. “We can hear thieves coming to steal our horses”, they whispered, afraid. “We cannot stop them ourselves” decided Brigid “we will stay inside and pray to God to protect the horses”.

The thieves stole away with their stolen horses and sneaked up to the house of a rich farmer with a large full granary. They decided that they would steal some of the grain and quietly loaded the stolen horses with large heavy sacks.
The thieves sneakily set out to go home with all their loot, but as they were travelling a thick fog developed and they became lost. After wandering for hours the thieves found their way to a house and thought they were home. They were so exhausted they went inside and fell quickly asleep.
