Frodo's Journey to Mordor
2
Entry 1 –
Today was probably the worst day of my life. Sam and I left the others today. The Shire seems so far away now. The days of fireworks and leisure are gone. Ahead I only see darkness, as the weight of the ring grows heavier. Originally, I was going to go alone, but Sam insisted on coming, and he nearly drowned because of it! We left by boat, with no sign of that monster, Gollum, and crossed the river on our journey toward Mordor.

Entry 2 –
Another dreary day on the journey to Mordor has passed. I suspect that we are traveling in circles as the rock formations are beginning to look increasingly familiar. What I wouldn’t give to have a mug of ale at the Green Dragon in the Shire. The thought of returning home free of the burden of the ring keeps us plodding through the canyon, braving the poor weather and drizzle. The darkness that descends on us daily makes traveling, even with my friend Sam, a difficult challenge – emotionally and physically.

Entry 3 –
Again, the same routine today – more walking in circles and the sad, overcast sky. The clouds themselves seem to cry out my woe. One thing was unusual today – the addition of a pitter-patter of feet whenever we would stop for lembas bread. Curious. Ah, well, even the bread is damp with rain and misery.

Entry 4 –
I’ve discovered what the pitter-patter of feet is – Gollum. He must’ve been following us since we left on the river. Sam tied him up with the Elven rope from Lothlorien, but Gollum bit him. Gandalf told me long ago that Gollum used to be a hobbit like me. His name was Smeagol, so I called him that today once he was safely detained. He sat up and asked, “What did you call me?” I answered, “Smeagol,” and he stared at me in astonishment with the largest eyes I have ever seen.
8
After much argument with Sam, the rope was finally removed and Gollum agreed to guide us to Mordor. He swore to keep us safe, even swearing on “the precious.” The ring that threatens us each day with heavy and foreboding difficulties has shrunk him down to this subservient creature. Sad.

Entry 5 –
Gollum led us partly through the dead marshes today. I almost fell into the water, but Gollum Smeagol pulled me out. The pull of the lights in the water and the trance-like gaze of the corpses from the battles of Suaron, called to me, or maybe the ring. It was almost too much to bear. Thankfully, Smeagol saved me. While in the marshes, we saw our first winged Nazgul. What a fright! We hid from its sight, and continued our journey after it passed. How did I get myself into this?
Frodo

Entry 6 –
All around us, as far as the eye can see, marsh midges fly in groups, biting and stinging, but we continue one. Smeagol says we should be out of the marshes by tomorrow. I hope he is right. The flickering lights from the marshes are starting to bug me, and the constant dreary sky weighs my already low heavy spirit down. I don’t know if I can remain calm any longer, and the ring is becoming increasingly hot and burdensome. Why must I carry this evil alone?
Frodo
12
Entry 7 –
We finally got clear of the marshes. The plains lie before us, a welcome change from the dancing, evil lights and frozen corpse smiles of the dead marshes. The sky is still overcast, but it is now also darkening on the horizon. The formidable black clouds and red fire lines of Mordor paint the horizon where the parched land meets the sky. Rain is still falling in short bursts, and thankfully, the midges are no longer present. We rarely take breaks, and only then when something can shield us from the ever-present eye and his lurking minions.
13
Mordor is growing closer thanks to the guidance of Smeagol, but I know that Sam fears there is treachery behind his big eyes. I hope he is wrong.
Frodo
14
Entry 8 –
We’ve been taken captive! Our captor says his name is Faramir, and he seems to be wise. He claims he is the brother of Boromir, a member of our fellowship. Boromir was corrupted by the evil power of the ring I bare, so who knows if this brother has the same tendencies. He looks like Boromir with his broad shoulders, red-brown hair, and stout build, but he is taller than Boromir. Even still, I miss our fellowship. Talk of Boromir makes me long for the protection of Aragorn’s sword, Legolas’s bow, and Gimli’s axe. I hope they are faring well.
15
Smeagol escaped capture which is reassuring. Though our journey to Mordor has been interrupted, I spy a silver lining – Sam’s unending cheerfulness was seen again today as he saw an oliphaunt.

Entry 9 –
After some debate, Faramir has released us. He was a wise man indeed, choosing to let us continue our journey to destroy the ring rather than succumb to the fate of his brother under the corruption of the ring.
Smeagol led us toward what he called a secret passage into Mordor. Once we arrived, though, he disappeared. I should have suspected his treachery – Sam was right all along! Sam and I made our way through the dark tunnels before running back the way we’d come.
18
Eyes watched us, and our only protection was the phial that Galadrial had given me. When the eyes disappeared and we came back to the entrance of the tunnel, we discovered that it was covered in a thick, white-gray, web-like material. We were sticking on all sides! Using our blades, we hacked through the entrance and made our way to the bottom of the hill. To our surprise, a giant spider came down from the tunnels and stung me.When I woke, I found myself in a dark room guarded by orcs.
