On December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin, a naturalist, set sail on the Beagle, with a captain and crew. They would complete a five year exploration, with their first stop at the Cape Verde Islands. Here he would make his first discovery.

First discovery:
Darwin saw a white band of shells high above sea level. How did they get there? According to Darwin, the continents and sea floor had shifted taking the shells with them.

Darwin made his next important discovery off the coast of South America on the Falkland Islands. He had been collecting fossils for a couple of weeks which led him to...

His second discovery:
The fossils were different from the ones he had taken off of the beaches of South America! Later, Darwin used this discovery to give proof for his idea of animal and plant distribution.

On March 4th, the Beagle entered the Harbor of Talcuhano, near Concepcion. Nearly every house around the harbor was destroyed. What had happened? As Darwin found, an earthquake had occurred, assisting him in his next discovery.
