All about the Industrial Revolution-
The Industrial Revolution took place from 1760-1890. It was a big change from Colonial times. The word revolution means a big and fast change. Life before the Industrial Revolution was long and hard. Everything was long and tiring. Everything was made by hand, unlike the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution, factories were everywhere. We needed the Industrial Revolution because things took too long to do. The Industrial Revolution changed that. Things were made easier and faster. Also transportation was a lot faster than in Colonial times and new inventions were created. The inventions helped goods be made faster and be shipped faster. The Industrial Revolution was a big change in our American history.

Steam Locomotives-
Did you ever wonder who invented the first steam locomotive? In this chapter you will learn about the steam locomotive and who invented it. Richard Trevithick put a steam engine on wheels and created the world’s first steam locomotive. Many years later steam locomotives were used as a way to travel distances. In 1829 2 steam locomotives were shipped from England to America. Unlike steamboats locomotives didn’t depend on water conditions, they had direct routes from place to place. They could carry passengers and heavy freight anywhere engineers could set the heavy rails. The first tracks were placed in cities and towns that were by the water. In 1840 the new U.S had almost 3,000 miles of train track. Then by 1860 the amount of train track had multiplied by 10!

In 1848 expensive gold was discovered in California. The expensive gold and silver was found in Colorado and Nevada. Once the US. government found out, they needed track linking the 2 west and east coasts. In 1866 Alfred Nobel invented dynamite which made it easier to break hard stuff and lay train track. After the rails were laid instead of 6 dangerous weeks to travel it only took 5 or 6 not so dangerous days. We can thank the Industrial Revolution for the transportation we have today. If the Industrial Revolution never happened we would still be riding in ox carts.

A Life In The Canal
In the following story you will learn about what life was like working on the Erie Canal. It is about an 11 year old boy named Thomas Davis who worked on the Erie Canal.
I woke up on a hot summer day in New York. I walked over to the old kitchen then I remembered that my family went to work on the Erie Canal. I looked out my bedroom window and saw them working hard and then a big and deadly rock falls right on them.
9
”NO!!!” I screamed as I jumped out the window and to the Canal. I couldn’t believe what just happened. A worker had already lifted up the big and deadly rock and luckily they were okay.
1 month later… Luckily they were okay but I had to work for them. I worked everyday for 16 hours. On March 24 I really worked. I woke up at 4:00 AM and went to the Canal to work. I picked up a shovel and got to work. By now my parents were better than before. I still worked hard though. I had worked until 8:00 am when a hard and deadly rock fell.

10
I heard a voice saying “watch out.” Then a man pushed me out of the way of a rock that was about to hit me.“Thanks,” I said.”You’re welcome,” Said JJ Watt ”Come work with me and my friends,” Said JJ.
Then Thomas went with JJ and met his friends. Ben Rivera, Camerone Newton and Duke kuechly. The next day they all went out and the Erie Canal was finished before they got out there. All 363 miles of it.Then they saw Thomas Davis walking back home with a shovel and a pickaxe. And the water flowing in the New Canal behind him. This is what it was like working on the Erie Canal. In the story a rock fell down and that is what it was like building the Canal. It was dangerous and deadly.

The Industrial Revolution
was a positive time
in our history.
People argue whether the Industrial Revolution was a positive or negative time in our history. I think it is a positive. It is important for people to know that the Industrial Revolution was a positive time in our history. Roads were built along with canals and bridges. Also because of the Industrial Revolution, it was easier to travel and ship goods from place to place.
One reason why the Industrial Revolution was a positive time in our history was because new roads were built. It was a good thing roads were built because, before the Industrial Revolution it took weeks and weeks to travel on unstable dirt roads, long distances. Also some people went insane on the long, deadly ride. New roads also helped people to travel without dying. These are some reasons why it was important that new roads were built.
