What is a dinosaur?

Dinosaurs were land reptiles that lived on the Earth more than 65 million years ago. This means, that they lived on the Earth a really really long time ago. All dinosaurs lived on land.

What is NOT a dinosaur?

Did you know that, flying reptiles and swimming reptiles are not dinosaurs? This means that if a reptile lived in the ocean, it was not a dinosaur. However, flying reptiles and swimming reptiles did live during the same time period as dinosaurs.

Feathered Dinosaurs

Nowadays, when we think of animals with feathers, we usually think of flying animals. It was discovered that some dinosaurs had feathers, however, these feathers were not used for flying. They were used for keeping the dinosaur warm.

Where did dinosaurs live?

We have to remember that when the dinosaurs lived on the Earth it looked a lot different. It even felt a lot different. Dinosaurs lived on every continent, including Antartica. When we think of Antartica, we think of a frigid place, but when the dinosaurs lived there, it was a lot warmer. The dinosaurs lived in many different types of environments including: the riverside, swamps, forest, deserts, and the evergreens.

What did dinosaurs eat?

Dinosaurs had two main types of diets. These diets included plants and meat.

Plant Eaters

If a dinosaurs' diet was plant-based then they are called a herbivore. This is similar to a term that we have nowadays, called a vegetarian. An example of a herbivore is a brachiosaurus.
