Tyler Oakley was born in 1989 in Jackson, Michigan. His parents had gotten divorced when he was a toddler so he always had two families.
As a child, he grew up with an addictive personality, no matter what he was doing he must have had everything to do with that particular thing.

In sixth grade he moved to a new town where he turned to choir and drama to make friends. Tyler grew up loving food making him unhealthily overweight. Around when he was in middle school he tried to take care of the situation but instead formed an eating disorder. By the time he reached high school he was able to overcome the disorder. As he had gotten through middle school he slowly lost the weight.

In high school, Tyler became open about his sexuality. Though there were many who did support him there were many who did not. In high school, he continued drama club and choir, where he continued to embrace this talent.
In school, he studied communications with focuses in marketing and social media, which later helped him with his career.

In college, Tyler missed some of his very close high school friends. One day, he stumbled upon YouTube and saw how people were able to talk into the camera. Tyler started making videos just for his high school friends where he showed them his dorm.
