Easter is one of the most important Christian holidays. The exact date of the holiday changes from year to year but it usually falls on April. Preparation for Easter starts seven weeks before the actual holiday. It’s called the advent of Lent. Many Christian people don’t eat meat and animal products during this period. The week before Easter is quite busy because people start thoroughly preparing for the holiday. The traditions of Easter celebration vary from country to country. For example, in our country the Sunday before Easter is called a Willow Sunday. On this day people bring home some willow branches which have been blessed in church. Thursday before Easter is called Clean Thursday. Traditionally people should bathe before sunrise on this day. There is also a Good Friday. It’s the day when women bake Easter bread called “paska” or “paskha”. On Saturday children dye Easter eggs, which are called “pysankas”. In the evening people go to church for the Easter mass, which lasts all night. Sunday is the actual day of Easter. People visit each other on this day and exchange colourful “pysankas”.

Easter is one of the main holidays in Ukraine. It is celebrated in spring in different dates from mid-April to early May. Ukrainian people prepare in advance for holiday. All week before Easter is preparation. People clean their home, cook traditional food, an Easter cake, paint eggs and do other deeds. On Saturday before Easter they go to church. On Sunday all people begin greet each other shouting: «Christ is Risen !” and answer:”He is Risen Indeed!”.
At night or early in the morning all people go to church to bless Easter cakes, colored eggs and other food. After returning home they arrange an Easter feast.

Easter is a very important holiday for many Ukrainian people. My family and I go to the church this day. We buy or cook Easter cakes. In the evening my family cook eggs and then we paint them, it’s very funny. Then we take two baskets and put eggs, cakes and other products there. At seven a.m. we get up, take our baskets and go to the church to bless food and drinks. After that my family and I visit our grannies. We have breakfast together. Our family plays traditional Easter game called "Funny eggs' fight”.

At Easter Ukrainian women always bake Easter bread, it is so tasty! The next tradition is about food too, so we usually boil eggs and paint them in different colors. We put Easter bread and eggs in a basket , and go to church to bless Easer treats. The symbol of Easter in Ukraine is willow twigs. Easter my family and our friends always meet in the forest. We have picnic there. Also we play some games. But our traditional game is to crack Easter eggs.

Easter is the most ancient Christian holiday. Easter is a special day. This is a celebration of kindness and love. My family has always respected the tradition of Easter and prepared for the great feast. On Friday, before Easter, I wake up and smell delicious smell because my mother has prepared cakes!
My mom bakes cakes according to an old recipe from her family, so my mom's Easter cakes are always fragrant, rosy and very beautiful. We paint eggs which are a symbol of life. Painting eggs is a beautiful and interesting tradition.
I have obtained figures of different colors. Soon Easter! Each year, the whole family goes to church! There are many people and they are happy and excited.
All the relatives gather together and meet holiday. Easter is a wonderful day, a celebration of the Resurrection.

Ukraine’s most famous cultural product may be its colorfully dyed eggs. Pysanka designs are traced out in beeswax and the egg is then dipped into dye. The dye colors the egg where it is bare but leaves it white where the wax protects it. The process is then repeated as many times as desired to create an intricate, many-layered pattern. “Pysanka” is a piece of art and requires good amount of time to create it. That is why most people dye couple dozens of “krashanky”. Traditionally Ukrainians used natural dyes like onion peel for rich mahogany and beet root for reds and pinks. Liza Balashova, group 2-3
Easter cake and painted eggs are the symbols of Ukrainian Easter and obligatory food on the table this day. Kulich is baked from yeast dough in the form of cylinder. Krashanka is a boiled and painted egg. On this Day Ukrainian kids play their favorite Easter game: knocking the eggs. If you knock somebody’s egg and you egg is not broken than you are the winner. The krashanky and pysanky (Easter eggs) are an old pre-Christian element and have an important role in the Easter rites. On this day they are given as gifts or exchanged. Liza Golubenko, group 2-5
