What is down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. Also most of the time it is by chance because, Down syndrome isn't inherited. It's caused by a mistake in cell division during the development of the egg, sperm or embryo. Finally it can not be prevented.

How do we know our child has Down syndrome?

A test can be taken 14-16 weeks of pregnancy, the test is called amniocentesis. During the test cells from the fetal is sampled and examined for genetic defects.
