There once was a young boy named José who was born in Mexico. On his 10th birthday, his parents decided to migrate to the United States to create more opportunities for their son.

Vamos a los estados unidos!

Moving away from home meant José had to go to a new school and make new friends. This made him very nervous because he did not know very much English, he only spoke Spanish back at home.

Pero, mis amigos!!!

Soon enough, José and his family moved into a new home in Michigan. On his first day of school, which was in the middle of the school year, the teacher introduced him to the class.

"Class, today we have a new student, his name is José. Let's welcome him. José would you like to tell us a little about yourself?" said Miss Ivy.

Oh, no he thought. I don't know how to say much in English...what do I do...I don't want to stand up and speak in front of all the kids.

"Um...hello...my name....is...José. I from...Mexico." José quickly sat down back in his seat.

The next day at school was a little better, José started to adjust to his new schedule. However, he was still not able to talk with his classmates because they spoke English so fast.

"How come that new kid never talks?" said Jimmy, one of the students in José's class.

"I heard he doesn't know English. He must not be smart or something." said Rachel, another student.

The next week, during Math class the students were learning about multiplication. José loved math and would always get A's on his Math tests back in Mexico.

"Class, today we are going to continue our discussion on multiplication," said Miss Ivy.

As soon as Miss Ivy said this, José looked up from his doodle on his notebook.

Oh, I love math, José thought.

"Everyone get out your pencils and get ready to do a problem. What is 71x5?" Miss Ivy asked.

All the students sat quietly because no one knew the answer.

71x5=?

José started thinking in his mind...

71x5...hmmm...I know this, that's easy! It's 355! I don't even need to work the problem out on paper I can do it in my head. Should I answer the teacher? But how do you say 355 in English? Maybe I shouldn't raise my hand.

After a few minutes passed Julia raised her hand and answered the question. The whole class clapped, but José didn't because he knew the answer way before she did, he just didn't have the words to say it.
