An Introduction to the West Nile Virus
West Nile virus (WNV) is a virus that is found in wild birds and carried by
mosquitoes. It was first identified in the province of West Nile, Uganda in 1937.
Since then it has been identified in Egypt, Asia, Israel, South Africa, parts of
Europe and Australia.

What is the West Nile Virus?
The West Nile virus is a disease spread by mosquitoes. The condition
ranges from mild to severe.



How is the virus transmitted?
It is believed that the West Nile virus is spread when a mosquito bites
an infected bird and then bites a person. However, not all mosquitoes
spread the West Nile Virus.
