Why Do I Sometimes Feel....
By Dr. Tarra Bates-Duford
2
Jenny Penny as she was affectionately known by family and friends was growing increasingly excited about the start of the school year. After all she would be starting the 3rd grade in a month. Fear, excitement, anticipation, and nervousness all combing into a huge ball in Jenny Penny's stomach. Sort of like the ball of dough grandma rolls for her delicious pies, umm hmm, Jenny could practically taste them now. Jenny hoped she would reconnect with old friends and make several new ones.

Jenny Penny loved being the center of attention. She couldn't get enough of the attention she received when she was doing something silly or funny. Jenny just loved to hear others laugh at her antics. When she is not the center of attention she becomes very irritable and angry, but she can't understand why. Sometimes, Jenny feels like she is losing control.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when Jenny decided to go to the mall with her mom and her mom’s best friend, which Jenny referred to as Aunt Terri. Jenny loved spending time with aunt Terri because she told funny stories about her and mom when they were kids. Aunt Terri also loved to dance in a silly way. Jenny just knew she was going to have a great day at the mall.
5
The day started off great, Jenny Penny got to hear all the great stories about mom and Aunt Terri when they were kids. She got to eat ice cream, try on some really nice clothes, especially those splatter paint jeans she always wanted. She also got to see some of her friends who were also shopping at the mall. Knowing her mother wanted her to try on more clothes, Jenny decided to sneak off to be with her friends. Noticing Jenny Penny was no longer standing next to her, Jenny's mother and Aunt Terri began to frantically search for in the store.

With her heart beating in her ears Jenny's mother raced out of the store to find Jenny several stores away playing with one of her friends. She raced over to Jenny and furiously asked her why had she left the store without telling her. She then grabbed Jenny's hand and attempted to walk back to the store, half walking, half dragging a resistant Jenny. Jenny becoming extremely angry began to throw a tantrum once they returned to the store. She angrily began ripping clothes from the racks.

Jenny's mother asked her to stop, and for a moment she appeared to listen. She stopped ripping the clothes from the racks and tossing them on the floor. Suddenly Jenny began to shriek and continue throwing clothing on the floor. Jenny's mother and Aunt Terri tried to calm her down, assuring her she could play with her friend another day. Jenny's mother promised her if she stopped screaming and throwing clothes on the floor her father would make sure she went on playdates with her friend.

As if nothing had happened just a few moments earlier, Jenny began to smile, giggle, and cartwheel through the store. Jenny's mother and Aunt Terri initially were surprised at the quick change in her behavior. They began looking back and forth between each other and Jenny. However, Jenny's mom quickly became very sad and a little worried. Jenny's behavior has been increasingly moody and unpredictable lately.

Fearing her daughters behavior would be getting worse, or even interfere with her performance in school, Jenny's mother decided to speak with her father about her behavior. She wanted to talk about what they should do when Jenny acted out. Her parents decided to seek help with understanding Jenny's unpredictable behaviors and moods. They decided they could no longer ignore Jenny's behavior, they needed to understand it and help Jenny gain control of the behavior. They wanted to be a happy family again.

Getting a referral from Jenny's pediatrician, her parents decided to make an appointment with a doctor that works with children and behavior. Jenny had an appointment to meet with Dr. Williams in one week.
The week leading to her appointment with Dr. Williams was the longest week of Jenny's life. Jenny Thought "what if Dr. Williams finds something wrong with me"? Sensing Jenny's nervousness about meeting the new doctor her parents decided to make the week before Jenny's appointment into a family fun week.

Just like with most planned activities the week started off well, that is until Jenny Penny became angry. Jenny's parents tried to calm her down, reassuring her they could play the game again when she grabbed the board game, ripping it in half and throwing the pieces. Jenny's father becoming upset, ordered Jenny to go to her room. Jenny's mother still sitting at the table silently cried. The rest of the week went pretty much the same way, Jenny Penny being her usual funny, adorable self then turning into the angry Jenny that yelled, screamed, and destroyed items in the home.

Jenny hated what she was doing to her parents, she hated seeing the sadness in their eyes whenever she misbehaved, or see the confusion on their faces whenever she spoke really fast. She wanted to be a good girl, the old Jenny Penny but she just couldn't. On the morning of her appointment, Jenny was a ball of nerves. She tried to calm down but she couldn't take her mind off her doctors appointment. Thankfully, grandma and Aunt Terri called to tell her everything would be fine and tell her knock, knock jokes. The drive to see Dr. Williams took only 20 minutes but it
