Hi, I’m Eva Energy and today I’ll tell you all about my journey through the Energy Pyramid. The Food Pyramid is a fun way to show how organisms get the energy from the food they eat. There are five levels and I’m going to show you every one. Plus a fun little bit, called the 10% rule, but we’ll get to that later.

The first step in getting energy is having the sun. Although the sun is really where it all starts, the sun is usually not included in the actual pyramid.
3

Once I leave the sun I enter the plants. Plants like trees, and bushes, and flowers use me to live and grow.On the Energy Pyramid plants are known as producers. Being a producer is just a fancy way of saying an organism that produces or makes their own food.
4

The next step up are the primary consumers. These are organisms such as caterpillars that eat the producers. When they eat the producers I am transferred from the plant to the consumer. There I am now used to help the primary consumer live and grow.
5

Above the primary consumers are the secondary consumers like a bird. Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers and I am transferred from the primary consumer to the secondary consumer. Secondary consumers now use me to carry out their life functions like walking, running or flying.

Finally at the top of the Energy Pyramid are the quaternary consumers such as bobcats. These consumers eat the tertiary consumers for their energy. I travel from the tertiary consumer to the quarternary consumer.

8

Now that you know how I travel it’s time to talk about that 10% rule I mentioned earlier. The 10% rule tells us that every time we go up the amount of energy an organism gets decreases, or get smaller, by 10%.
