Our planet is amazing. It is the third planet from the sun and, as far, as we know, the only planet that supports life!
2
The solar system is the nine planets, including Earth, that orbit our Sun. Our system is part of the universe, which is infinite. We are part of the Milky Way galaxy. Even though we cannot feel the motion, Earth is a sphere that is constantly rotating on its axis, which is on a slight tilt. Each rotation is a day. Each orbit around the sun is a year.
3
One of the most interesting things about Earth are the oceans. We are the only planet to be covered three quarters by liquid water. Oceanic life is vast and so much of it is yet to be discovered. There are abundant parts of the ocean floor that have never even been seen by humans!
4
There are layers to our Earth. The layer we can see is called the crust. Below that, there is the upper mantle. The upper mantle and crust together form the lithosphere. Under that there is the lower mantle. At the center of the Earth there is the core. There is both an outer core and an inner core.
5
There are also levels of the atmosphere. Closest to us with the lowest altitude there is the troposphere. Above that there is the stratosphere. Then there is the mesosphere. The furthest layer is the thermosphere.
6
Volcanoes are one the driving forces of change on our planet. Volcanoes can either be dormant or active. If a volcano is active, it can erupt at any time. An eruption means lava spews from an opening in a volcanic mountain. A volcano can erupt abruptly or slowly. The lava can fly into the air or magma can slowly spill out through a vent,
7
A very, very long time ago, a huge approximately 10 kilometers wide asteroid hit the planet. This event changed the topography of the land leaving a huge crater where it landed and caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Since the demise of ancient species like the dinosaurs, we can only study them through found fossils.
8
Although the sun provides us with heat, light, and an energy source, it can also harm us. Solar rays can reach Earth, burning our skin. The ozone layer is meant to protect us from sin damage, and also to help regulate the temperature of the surface of the Earth. Harmful emissions like C02 erode the ozone layer. Aerosol is one way C02 pollutes the air.
9
Temperature is recorded in two main scales. In the US we use Fahrenheit, but in most other countries they use Celsius to measure temperature. A thermometer is used to determine the temperature.
10
The planet is split into two hemispheres, north and south. The dividing line is called the equator. It runs through the middle of the planet, if you were to look at it as a vertical image. Climates nearer the equator are more tropical and warm. The closer the poles you are, the colder it gets.
11
It is easy to forget that our planet is not made up of unlimited resources. We all have to do our best to reduce, reuse, and recycle and decrease our effects on the Earth. We all influence the future of our planet with our actions. It is time we work towards alternative energy sources, like solar energy and other renewable energy.
12
Have you ever gone surfing? Waves can be fun, but they are also very powerful. The wind from far off in the ocean can create huge waves at the shorelines on the coast. The moon and its gravity also influence currents and the flow of the oceans.
13
In recent years our climate has been changing. The whole world is getting hotter. When the glaciers melt, the sea levels increase. As the icebergs are converted from a solid to a liquid, this will have negative effects on the planet.
14
There are also major droughts happening around the world. Our state, California is in one of the worst droughts in its history. We now feel more like a desert than ever before.
15
Have you ever felt an earthquake? They are constantly happening, even if we don't notice! Tectonic plates are moving around on top of the Earth's mantle all the time. They are diverging and converging. Sometimes we feel these movements as earthquakes. The epicenter is the point on the surface above the origin of the earthquake. It is not uncommon for us to feel plate tectonics.
16
Plate tectonics are also responsible for continental drift. When the Earth was young, the continents were all attached as one solid land mass. Slowly, over billions of years they drifted apart.
17
Have you been in a thunderstorm? Were there massive cumulonimbus clouds? Maybe smaller nimbostratus clouds? Or just the start of a storm with developing cumulos clouds? It can be both beautiful and scary to observe a rainstorm.
18
Liquid water from the ground and oceans heats up and becomes a gas that evaporates into the atmosphere. There it gathers and condensation occurs to form clouds. These clouds accumulate too much moisture become to heavy and rainfall,or snow fall empties the clouds. That is precipitation. This is a never ceasing cycle.
19
Do you know what the northern lights are? The beautiful moving lights of the aurora are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the Earth's atmosphere. The lights are visible above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. They are known as 'Aurora borealis' in the north and "Aurora australis" in the south. Magnetism can be awesome too!
