This is Bubbles...
She lives happily with her friends and family in the ocean.

2
Bubbles has a younger brother with the name of Blue.

Today, for the very first time, Blue went out into the great big ocean all by himself, but...
3
Blue ran into a SHARK!

And just barely escaped.
4

"How did he not sense the shark was near!?"

“I knew this might happen…” Bubble’s mother sighed. “It’s because of the ocean acidification”.
5

“What’s ocean acidification?”

Ocean acidification* is when carbon dioxide dissolves in our ocean, decreasing pH, which is why Blue’s senses have been affected and weakened even more than ours”
6

"Um... What's pH?"
Their Father replied, “pH* is a scale from 1 to 14 and tells how acidic or basic something is. It is roughly the negative of the logarithm to base 10 of the molar concentration, measured in units of moles per liter, of hydrogen ions…”
7

Mother said to Father, "Honey, we can't all be sciencefish... Basically kids, the water has become more acidic, which is bad, and that is why our coral reef* homes are being destroyed and our senses weakened."
Bubbles and Blue didn't understand...
8
Bubbles didn't get why this was happening so she went to her friends Misa and Phineas who were two years older, so she thought they must know the answer...

“I remember learning this in Mrs. Fineema’s class, F-ISH! We learned about the Carbon Cycle* and we were told that our ocean is a carbon sink*" Misa said.
9

Phineas added, “Supposedly humans rely too heavily on the ocean to absorb the anthropogenic fossil fuels and greenhouse gases* in order to solve their problem with Global Warming* ”
“But many don’t know that the ocean pH has dropped 0.1 pH units due to the over burning and production of Greenhouse gases* and Carbon Gas.”
10

How much Carbon can the ocean possibly be absorbing*?”
“About one-third of the man-made CO2 alone, which ends up being 22 million tons a day because 80 million tons are released into the atmosphere everyday.”
11

"That is almost 1 million tons an hour!"
"The acidification is truly affecting the entire ocean, especially us at the coral reef, but you should take your brother to the doctor since his senses seem to be extremely damaged.I know a great one just a couple reefs away, we'll go with you!"
12

"What has happened here??"

13

"It's been a while since I've been here... Ocean acidification impacts the ability for coral reefs to recover and rebuild, as well as erodes the reefs faster than they can rebuild. This coral reef has been destroyed! Let's talk to a scienefish to get more information"

14

The friends traveled far and long in search for answers...

15
Until finally...
They arrived at the most beautiful reef they've ever seen.
16

"How is this coral reef so beautiful?"
"We're at a preserved coral reef!"
"Look! there's Dr. Timothy! Let's go!

17

The friends explained what was wrong and asked Dr. Timothy what was happening to their ocean.
"Take a swim with me." Dr. Timothy said.

18
These oysters cannot flourish due to the effects of Ocean Acidification, which throws off the entire food chain, as these organisms play a large role in our marine biodiversity. Their shells are becoming weaker because Ocean Acidification translates to the decrease of carbonate ions* which is necessary for organisms with carbonate shells to stay strong. Look at this picture...

19
This is a pteropod that has been eaten away and dissolved by the ocean
20
The fish went to the Philadelphia Zoo next to meet some friends of Dr. Timothy, who are working to preserve oceans and prevent Ocean Acidification.

21

Here at the Philadelphia Zoo we work to raise awareness to our visitors about ocean acidification and also conserve and protect damaged habitats and organisms.

22

Our goal is to encourage adults and children visitors to make wise environmental decisions, and we teach the ways to prevent ocean acidification through energy saving tasks and burning less fossil fuels and greenhouse gases like carbon.
