It all started at a dinner table discussion. As the school year was closing to an end, Cam’s parents inquired how they would keep their wild children preoccupied for an entire two months. Cam’s toddler sister, fidgeting in her highchair, passed up her serving of baby carrots for a nice big bite out of the television remote. As she wailed in disapproval of the hard plastic against her toddler teeth, the television screen flashed to a shot of the Florida Gators losing a game of baseball in the final inning.

Though Cam wasn’t much of a baseball fan, this particular team caught her attention because it sparked images of sun-soaked beaches, palm trees blowing in the breeze, and flip-floppy toes covered in sand. Cam, bobbing in her seat, matched her sister’s wails as she pitched her vacation proposal to her parents in a screaming speech so loud they couldn’t protest. It was decided. Cam and her family were going to Florida for the summer. Or, at least, for a week.

When Cam thought about their trip, she pictured herself in Panama City, Daytona Beach, or even Miami. She wanted a classic Florida vacation. She comprised a to-do list that was occupied by very little. She wanted to lay on the beach, soak up the sun, and maybe get her feet wet in the ocean. However, Cam’s parents pictured their vacation slightly differently in the old city of St. Augustine, among all the history kept alive in the narrow cobblestone streets. Her parents had a lengthier to do list.

Yet, Cam was sure that, once she got there, she could argue her way down to the beach before she was strung along on some family-planned educational outing. But, as the family rolled into the sunshine state, they were met with heavy rain showers under a menacing dark gray sky. When they reached St. Augustine, the sand was too wet, the waves were too rough, and the sun remained hidden behind clouds that seemed like they would never go away. Now, Cam had no choice but to meander around the old town as her parents fulfilled their boring idea of vacation.

Cam's parents began their tour by informing her that St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by a Spanish Admiral named Pedro Menendez de Aviles, making it the first city to be established by European explorers in what is now considered the United States. Now, her parents said they would get a chance to be explorers too. Their first stop was Castille de san Marcos. The fort was constructed for the Spanish military in order to maintain Spanish control over Florida from England and France. The fort's history tells a story of control and feelings of entitlement. In the 1800's it served as a prison for Native Americans who resisted European nation's will to control their land. Who did St. Augustine really belong to?

Next, the family of explorers ventured to Fort Mose. Fort Mose was established in 1738, five years after the King of Spain proclaimed that any enslaved Africans would be considered free in Spanish-owned territory if they converted to catholicism. English colonists in Charles Towne, South Carolina brought over Africans and forced them into slavery. Many of them escaped to Spanish-owned Florida and resided in Fort Mose, making it the first free community for ex-slaves. As Cam and her family finished their exploration of Fort Mose, she began warming up to the historical side of St. Augustine. Perhaps this place, with it's rich cultural history, was more than just sandy beaches.
