Thud! New files were thrown hastily on Officer Ben’s desk as he sat there sleepily drinking his morning coffee. “Crime isn’t going to stop itself, officer” barked Sergeant Tom. Officer Ben grabbed the first file on top and started shuffling through it. “Hmmmm….this looks interesting. How long has this boy’s bike been missing?” asked Officer Ben, his interest peaking. “Since yesterday…now snap to it! Your little detective pals are waiting for you outside.”

Officer Ben trudged to the door and peeked outside. It seemed hard to believe that any type of crime would ever happen in such a perfect little town. It was another beautiful day in Evansdale! The sky was as blue as a robin’s egg and everything was still and serene.

5
As Ben slowly opened the door, the detective duo named Sam and Jake happily trotted over and pounced on their owner to give him big sloppy good morning kisses. Officer Ben embraced them quickly. “Well boys, it looks like it’s going to be another busy day for us! We have a case to solve!”

6
Sam and Jake’s ears perked up. They loved a good case. “What is it? Who is it? Where should we start? How did it happen?” The two Jack Russel Terrier puppies perked their ears up as they started firing questions at their owner. “Easy there little fellas,” Officer Ben said calmly. “We need to discuss the facts first before we go off on a wild pooch chase!”

7
Officer Ben walked over to the police car and pulled open the passenger door. Jake and Sam raced to be first to the seat. “You got the front seat last time,” complained Jake. Sam gave his brother a look of contempt and slid to the back. “Ok, let’s get serious guys; you can fight it out later if you want.

8
. This is what we know so far….a boy’s red bike, a Super Strider 600 to be exact, was stolen yesterday at 1:00 p.m. from Heritage Park. The boy was swimming in the lake and came back to get on his bike and found it gone.” “A boy’s bike, huh? I guess when you don’t have legs like ours; you have to get your speed on in other ways, right Jake?” Sam said playfully. Jake laughed, “You’re right brother. Hopefully we can get this solved quickly for the poor little guy.” “Where should we start Officer Ben?” asked Jake. Officer Ben shook his head. “The scene of the crime of course! Let’s roll!”
9
Officer Ben carefully navigated the car along the main road of Evansdale. Shops were just starting to open up for the day and the streets were getting busier. Officer Ben noticed a new shop named Peanut Palace with a freshly painted “We’re Open” sign on the front. After a few short minutes, the detective team arrived abruptly at Heritage Park.

10
The large park was in full swing now that it was summertime. You could hear kids laughing and shouting with joy as they pushed their swings high into the air. Parents were chatting and drinking ice cold drinks, trying to stay cool in the shade of the big old Oaks. Ben and his pooches could see the small lake where the boy’s bike had disappeared.

11
Ben opened the door for Sam and Jake and they bounded down to the water. Before Officer Ben could stop them, they had already dived into the water. “Boys, stop that. We need to focus on the crime here,” Ben scolded lovingly. Sam and Jake gave Ben an ashamed look and ran back up to the shore to meet him.

12
Officer Ben was searching the picnic area by the beach for the right spot. He was trying to think back to the police report to whether the bike was taken from Heritage East or West. The dogs, much faster than Ben, split up to search both sides. As Jake sped to Heritage East, an area had been clearly marked off the day before by Sergeant Tom on a small grassy patch next to a picnic table. Jake and Sam got right to work, using their noses to find any clues while Officer Ben got out tools to collect any evidence they found.

13
“Ahha! I found a clue,” stated Jake. Officer Ben and Sam hurried over to see what Jake had found. “A banana peel?” Sam said with a chuckle. “Was the thief a monkey?” Officer Ben quickly discarded the peel and directed the distracted boys to keep looking.

14
After a few moments, Jake let out a quick shout. Hidden from plain view under the picnic table was a small DS player. “I wonder if whoever took the bike left this behind,” Sam said thoughtfully. Officer Ben got out his gloves to grab the device and stared at it intently. He turned it on to find the game playing was Mario Kart. Officer Ben was puzzled. “It looks like this is the only game on it.” Sam and Jake joined their owner and peered over at the video game.

15
Before they could start licking furiously at the device, Officer Ben quickly dropped it into an evidence bag and called the boys to the car. “Let’s go back to the station to think about what we found,” Officer Ben said firmly. Both boys scampered into the car, choosing to share the seat this time to be close to their owner.

17
On their way back to the station, Officer Ben was thinking intently about the clues they had found so far. There was something about the peanut butter that stuck out to him. He was having a feeling of déjà vu. Wait a second...didn’t the bakery he had seen earlier that day have something to do with peanuts?

18
He continued driving until he saw the shop once again. On a colorful banner in front of the door, he spotted the words Peanut Palace – We make goodies galore all with creamy peanut butter! “That’s interesting,” Officer Ben announced. “And yummy!” drooled the dogs. “Let’s take a quick peek inside,” Officer Ben declared.

19
When they arrived inside they instantly smelled the delicious mix of peanut butter and baked bread. Behind the counter was a small woman restocking the breads and muffins on the shelves. “Good Morning Ma’am.” “Mornin’ Sir,” the woman greeted cheerfully. “What can I get for you and your cute pups?” “Actually, we are working on a case and were wondering if you had a customer in here recently with a DS game. We have a missing bicycle and the only clue we found was a video game covered in sticky peanut butter. I thought we might give your shop a try on a whim.”
20
“Hmmmm,” the woman paused to think. “Actually, there was a young girl in here the other day buying peanut butter pretzels for her Mom. She barely took her eyes away from her game long enough to tell me her order,” the woman revealed. After receiving the news that the woman did not recognize her, the trio left the shop to ponder what to do next.
