Amira;the aboriginal girl who made a big difference

One day, in a village in Haida Gwaii, a young slender girl with dark hair and tanned skin was sewing beneath the large Cedar tree behind her longhouse. It was a bright sunny day, and she was sewing beads onto her dress for a special ceremony. This girl's name is Amira. Amira loves walking through the woods on the mountainside. She's handy with knives, too.

Once she finished, she would ask if she could go for a stroll in the woods. Oh how she loved the smell of the pines and cedars! It reminds her of the tasty cedar bark that her mother would dip into maple syrup to bring out the sweet taste. She would pocket a small carving knife and a deerskin purse with water within, and she would happily prance off into the woods.

That day while Amira skipped along the path, she heard a rustling in the leaves of a large brush. She thought it was just the wind. But before she could take another step, a high-pitched voice shrieked:
"Help, sister please!"
Amira froze; the strangest sensation sent a chill through her bones, for the voice was coming from the brush! Slowly, but carefully, she approaches the brush, knife at the ready. But when she pulled open the branches, what she saw made her scream; a little spirit bear, frail and hurt, lay amongst the branches.

"Oh my, how is it that you use human speech?"
"Help me out, and I shall explain. This hurts!"
Amira puts away her knife, and gently helps the little bear out of the brush. As she looks closely
at it's face, she realizes that it has many gashes and cuts on it's face. Once it was safely out of the brush, it said:
" The human race is destroying my tribe's home, and my tribe sent me to spread word to humans. But most run at the sight of a speaking bear, and some even attacked. None has ever listened as you have."
