Cell Membrane
Function: Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell and protects the cell from its surroundings.
Analogy: The cell membrane can be compared to the front doors of a building because the front doors allow things to go in and out just as the cell membrane allows items to go in and out of the cell.

Nucleus
Function: The nucleus controls many of the functions of the cell and contains DNA
Analogy: The nucleus can be compared to a main office of a business because the main office is like a control center just as the nucleus is the control center of a cell.

Cytoplasm
Function: The jelly-like fluid that fills a cell and supports the organelles of the cell.
Analogy: Cytoplasm can be compared to a swimming pool because the pool is filled with water on the inside just as a cell is filled with cytoplasm on the inside.

Mitochondria
Function: acts like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy for the cell.
Analogy: Mitochondria can be compared to sports programs because sports programs give energy to athletes just as the mitochondria gives energy to the cell.

Golgi Body (Apparatus)
Function: Packages proteins and carbohydrates into membrane-bound vesicles for "export" from the cell.
Analogy: The golgi apparatus can be compared to the buses of a school because the buses take kids from school just like the golgi apparatus transports things out of the cell.

Endoplasmic Reticulum
Function: Carries proteins throughout the cell.
Analogy: Can be compared to the hallways of a school because the hallways of a school guide students to class just as the endoplasmic reticulum carries and guides proteins throughout a cell.
