Down in the ocean lived a little dolphin named Dolly. She lived with her mother and her father who took very good care of her. Her mother always taught her to be wise and respectful. Her father always taught her to be friendly and taught her the things she knew.

Dolly loved to swim. One day she asked her mom,
"Mommy, why can't I swim over there, like the other animals are? "Sweetheart those are the very good swimmers that can swim on their own and at their own paste." Her mom explained.
"I can do that mommy!!!" Said Dolly while swimming crazily around her mother.
Her mother just laughed and said,
"Maybe your father can teach you that skill when your older but for now you can only swim with your age group in the kiddie area." Her mother said.

One day Dolly was going to go swim. She swam by herself because her parents would watch her from their caved home.
"So Dolly, what is the song? " asked her dad which went over this every time she went for a swim. "I am a nekton, stay with them the benthic area is where I don't swim." She responded.
"And what are benthos?"
"Benthos is an animals that lives at the bottom of the ocean." Said Dolly with courage.
"And what is a nekton?"
"MEEEEEEE, an animal that can swim by themselves!!" Said Dolly with excitement
"Good job! Have fun!" Her dad said as he laughed at his silly daughter.

As Dolly was swimming and playing with her ball she accidentally dropped it. It was the light weight balls so therefore when it dropped from her muzzle it sank.
"Ah man! the ball" She said to herself. At this point the ball was only a few feet from where she was. She thought she would just go and get it.

As she went down just a little to get the ball, she felt it get colder. She also felt a big weight on her. The water was getting a lot more dense or heavier.
"Woahhhh" screamed Dolly. She was being pushed to the bottom of the ocean and was sinking with the water.

When Dolly opened her eyes she saw that she was near the bottom of the ocean.
"Where am I?" she asked herself.
"Well hello there you are at the bottom of the ocean my dear!"
"Woah who's there?" Dolly asked.
"Its just me honeybun." Dolly looked to the right and saw a very pretty mermaid sitting on a rock and looking at her.
"Hi I'm Mely."
"Oh Hi I'm Dolly, where am I? Dolly asked with concern.

"Well honey I am afraid you have been caught up in a downwelling." Mely said.
"A what?" Dolly asked.
"A downwelling. That is when the water gets heavier than the water below it so its sinks to the bottom. You must have gotten caught up in it." Mely explained.
"I guess I did, but I really have to get back home. I'm sure my parents are looking for me."

"There's the bad news, you see the only way we can get out of here is if an upwelling occurs which is the opposite of a downwelling and happens when the water at the surface gets pushed by winds. The water from the bottom then gets pulled up top and we can get carried in back up." Mely explained.
"So how do we do that?" Dolly asked.
"It happens every 6 years and its almost at that point so you are lucky this time." Mely said.
