Caleb just woke up and he is ready to eat breakfast. He goes to the kitchen and finds two things that he can eat. He finds oatmeal and pop tarts. Which food item is a healthier choice for Caleb to have for breakfast?

That's right, oatmeal!
Oatmeal is a great source of fiber which helps with healthy digestion. Oats contain proteins, vitamins, and minerals that help fight high cholesterol and cancer (US Natioanl Library of Medicine, 2013).

After Caleb eats his breakfast he is really thirsty. He looks in the refrigerator to see what he can find to drink. He finds a can of soda and a water bottle. Which drink is a healthier choice for Caleb to have?

If you chose water, you are absolutely correct! Water is the healthiest drink on planet Earth. Water provides proper hydration to the entire body which also improves the function of the brain (Chard, Trinies, Edmonds, Sogore, & Freeman, 2019).

At lunchtime Caleb can't decide if he wants to eat a sandwich or a piece of cake. Which food choice would be a healthier item for Caleb to eat for lunch?

That's right! A sandwich is much more nutritious than a piece of cake. A piece of cake offers added sugars while a sandwich provides a good source of protein, vegetables, and grains that coincide with the Dietary Guidelines (Groark & Song, 2012).

A few hours after lunch, Caleb is ready for a snack. He asks his mom what he can have. His mom says he can have an apple or a doughnut. Is an apple or a doughnut more nutritious for Caleb to eat for snack?

Correct! an apple is a very nutritious snack. Fruits are a vital source of micronutrients for our bodies. They provide us with the vitamins and minerals that we need to maintain a healthy, balanced diet (Groark & Song, 2012).

Shortly after his snack, Caleb's mom asks if he wants to have pizza or chicken and vegetables for dinner. This was a tough decision for Caleb but he chose to go with the healthiest option. Which option do you think Caleb chose for dinner?
