Look who just arrived! These are my friends
Samuel Slater, Eli Whitney, and Elias Howe.
They are all such brilliant inventors.

First, meet Samuel Slater. The "Father of the Factory System," Samuel Slater
built the first factory in America in 1791 after memorizing the plans to a British
factory.

His introduction of the factory increased the expansion of
industry and manufacturing in America.

Everything seems to be
running smoothly here!

Next up we have Eli Whitney. In 1793, he invented
the cotton gin to separate the cotton seeds from the fiber.

His invention allowed cotton to become a profitable trade for southern
farmers. It also increased slavery because of the renewed need
for slaves to pick the cotton.

Eli was a busy man! He also developed the idea of interchangeable parts in
1850. This allowed easy and cheap replacement for broken parts of a machine.
It encouraged the development of mass production and the growth of
factories in the North.

Here is Elias Howe. He invented the sewing machine in 1845. The
machine made sewing at least 5 times faster than it was with hand
sewing. It allowed textiles to be made and sold for a profit,
increasing the trade of items such as clothes and books.

Look! More of my friends have made it to the party! I would like
you to meet Samuel Morse, John Deere, and Cyrus McCormick.
They too have made significant contributions to the growth of America.
