To my family for helping me get through my years of diabetes:)

INTRODUCTION

Hello, I'm E.A Beauregard! As you may have guessed from the front cover, this book is about living with diabetes. Here's a fact. Until Frederick Banting invented a medicine called insulin, it wasn't very likely that you would survive diabetes if you were diagnosed!
IN THE BEGINNING
The way we found out that I had diabetes was this.
One day when I was at the Aquatic Centre in Prince George for swimming lessons I started to feel really sick. Then when we went over to my Grandma's for brunch. I felt sick again. So the next day we went down to the hospital and got a blood test.

I got the blood test and then went over to my Grandma's for the rest of the day (it was a Monday and I was six so I would've been in school). After a while my dad called us and we went to my place. When we got there my dad gave us the bad news. I had Diabetes:(
So we went down to the hospital again and went up to the third floor, where my new doctor, Doctor Chaudry was waiting. They hooked me up to an iv because I needed a lot of water. Then they tested my blood sugar. It was like 54.5! That is super high and bad. So they injected some insulin in me and brought me some supper. Then I turned on the tv and watched for awhile. Then my mom read to me and then I slept or at least tried.

It took me until twelve pm to fall asleep. But even then I didn't sleep very long. The next day they took out my iv so that I could play in the playroom. They were really nice. After two days I was finally ready to go home. They gave me a
special kit that had a
tester, a poker and test
strips so that I could test
my blood sugar.

Before we left they also told us how to use the insulin needles and the testers. Then we went home, went over to the neighbours who were taking care of our dog, Sawyer. So we picked him up, went home, had dinner and went to sleep. The rest of the week I stayed home
from school. My mom went to my class
to talk to my classmates and answer
their questions.

The years that came next
Enough about the beginning. Time for you to learn about what came next. Everything went as usual, except for the fact that I had to poke my finger 8 times a day. I took guitar lessons. I did loads of stuff. The caretakers at school would help me. I had an awesome time.
I got an insulin pump. An insulin pump is a little device that you can use to give yourself insulin. You have to put an insertion into your arm, leg, belly or bottom. You test your blood sugar, and if you have the bayer tester it sends your blood sugar to the pump. You then put the amount of carbohydrates into the pump. Finally you click ACT and it shows you the estimated amount of insulin.
