When Equiano was 11 years old, he was kidnapped and sold to slave traders.
Olaudah was sold to many different traders and traveled to many different places in Africa.

One day Olaudah was sold to an owner of a slave ship.
He traveled on this ship across the Atlantic Ocean to North America.

Olaudah was sent to work on a farm in Virginia.
While he was there, Michael Henry Pascal, a lieutenant in the British royal navy, bought him to give as a present to friends in England.

Your new name is
Gustavus Vassa.
On the voyage back to England, Pascal decided to call him Gustavus Vassa.
Olaudah used this name for the rest of his life.

We are going to
let you go to school.
Thank you
so much!
Olaudah went to live with two sisters known as the Miss Guerins.
He learned to speak English. The sisters were kind to him and let him go to school.
Olaudah showed an interest in Christianity. The Miss Guerins helped him to be baptized into the church.

This is your new owner.
Olaudah is still a slave and must go on each voyage with his owner, Captain Pascal.
One day, Olaudah is surprised when Pascal sells him to another ship owner, Captain James Doran.
In 1763, Olaudah is taken back to the West Indies, where he is sold to Mr. Robert King.

If you pay me £40, I will give
you your freedom
Mr. King is kind to Olaudah. Mr.King lets him start a business of buying and selling goods and fruits on the ships.
Mr. King told Olaudah that if he saved forty pounds sterling, he would let him buy his freedom.

Thank you.
You are now free.
In 1766, Olaudah saved enough money to buy his freedom.

For a few months, Olaudah continued to sell goods on merchant ships.
