Thank you to Dr. Amina Chaudhri (NEIU) who assigned this challenging and rewarding final project in her Children's and Young Adult Literature course Both she, as well as another NEIU educator, Dr. Steve Wolk, are outstanding ambassadors for civic education and critical thought. Both have inspired me to create, write, and share works that challenge comfortable narratives, and promote dialogue, and continued learning. Of course, without the oral history from my Uncle Dan, Di Goo Ma, Uncle Isaac, Si Good Ma, and my father, this would not have been possible. Special thanks to Uncle Isaac who collected our family photographs and for Uncle Willy who digitized them. Finally, I am blessed with a father who put in the time to write his memoir in the first place and inspired me to write his-story.
Author's Note
The process of creating this book began long before the project. The stories that are included were told over many a family dinner or a long road trip, after many a "Tell me a story of when you were little!" My father eventually penned these stories into words and wrote a memoir in 2015. This project is its adaption.
The visual and interactive pages aim to put readers within the historical and emotional context of a refugee and immigrant experience, specifically that of Chinese refugees in the 1940's and the 1950's. From sifting through photographs and sketching family portraits, the creative process also became a very intimate encounter into a world I have heard much about, but have had little personal experience. In creating a college in which image and text comes together, I found that I could also recreate the piece-by-piece way that these stories have been collected, interpreted, and internalized over time. These pieces have come to shape my own identity, but also come together as a greater narrative of resilience and love that rings true for many. As summarized by father's words in his memoir,
"The most precious things in life can never be bought by the dollar."
