The Hindenburg was a German dirigible - a 

lighter-than-air ship.  

The Hindenburg was able to cross the Atlantic 

Ocean.   The trip took about 80 hours, or just 

over 3 days.

The Hindenburg was built in 1936.

At that time, airplanes were not able to cross 

the Atlantic Ocean.

People could cross the ocean by boat, but it 

took 2 or 3 weeks!

The Hindenburg was the fastest way to travel 

over the ocean.

The Hindenburg was a big airship.   It was 808 

feet long, or the size of three football fields!

Although it was large, the Hindenburg could 

only carry 72 passengers.   Each passenger 

had their own bedroom.   There was a common 

area where people would eat, read, write 

letters, or even listen to live piano music.

It was very expensive to fly on the 

Hindenburg.   A ticket cost $400.00 in 1936.  

Today, we would have to pay almost $5000.00!

You had to be rich to fly on the Hindenburg.
