Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States. Many people thought that he was a great President.
He had an interesting life. He began studying law in his teens after growing up in poverty. He became a lawyer and then a wealthy landowner in Tennessee.

During the War of 1812 Andrew Jackson became a war hero and was very popular among his troops. They said that he was "as tough as old hickory wood" on the battlefield, earning him the nickname "Old Hickory."

His popularity in the military got him nominated for the presidency of the United States. He won the election in 1828 and became the first president to invite the public to his inauguration at the White House.

Andrew Jackson gained the new nickname "the people's president" as a result of his popularity and replaced many of the current officeholders with his supporters. This practice became known as the "spoils system."
