The February 2011 Blizzard
I look out the window. Snow is falling everywhere! You can barely see the sky. The snow was piling. It was up
to two feet! As soon as snowplows came, they moved all of the snow to the sides of the streets. They made
mountains of snow. Some in town were about fifteen feet tall! Lucky for kids, there were two snow days coming
their way! Here is what we did on those two days with no school.
I came outside wrapped from head to toe in all of my winter clothing. I had to pull my feet out of the snow one
by one. When I finally reached the garage I pulled out my sled. It was going to be a long walk to Cherokee School’s
playground. Then I walked to the park with my neighbors, brothers, and sister. When we finally reached the park, I
went to the back hill. I sat on my sled and went down. It was great. I felt a nice cold breeze on my face. I went
down a couple more times. Then we made a ramp! My next turn down was phenomenal! I hit the jump and went
flying! Everybody wanted a turn! We made the ramp bigger and bigger and bigger! It was great! We had a
wonderful time. When we were finished sledding, we walked home and got some nice steaming hot chocolate. Then
we relaxed and watched some T.V.
-Frances H.
I walked over to my neighbor’s house picking up my foot every step. Glaring at the sparkling trees that are
dropping the pounds of snow on my foot. Right as I walked into their driveway, my neighbors yelled “Fire!” and
started to throw snowballs at me. It was really fun because then my two sisters came and we did girls against boys
no one really won but it was still fun. We all went to build a fort it took about an hour trying to dig the heavy snow
out of the pile. It was the coolest fort ever! We decided since there was a big hill, I should go get the sleds. It took
so long because I had to drag the big sleds around to get to the house. I tried to step in the spots that had the
footprints. I saw how pretty the snow was with the sun reflecting on it. The sledding was so much fun, so we had an
idea. We went up to my mom and begged her to let us go sledding at the best place ever! We wanted to go
sledding at the Deer Path. There was a really big hill there and we had such a good time going up and down the big
hill. We were so close to hitting a tree, but thankfully we didn’t. Finally we got some hot cocoa.

Skating in West Park
West Park is unique to Lake Forest because …in the winter everyone in Lake
Forest goes skating on the field/ice rink. The rink gets built this way by laying
down wood and rope to form the rink’s outline. Next we have to wait for it to
snow and the ground to freeze. Then the fire trucks come in and start to flood
the ice next we wait for the rink to freeze and once it does the city puts in the
nets and puts up the boards and then we can start skating.
Once it was a freezing cold day at West Park. I was skating and passing the
puck with my brother when it started to snow. The snow was thick and heavy
so it made it hard to skate. Sadly it got so bad we had to stop playing hockey.
Another day at West Park, I was skating and shooting pucks into the goal
and then the snow blew into my face. It felt like a 50 mph snowball was coming
at me.
West Park has always been one of our favorite places to go and it feels like a
second home.

Summer Concerts in Market Square
I walked into downtown Lake Forest. It is called Market Square. There was a
simple breeze. It rushed down my bare shoulder. I took a chair and brought it
over to the patch of grass. Right away, I went off with my sister. We went to go
get snow cones from the cart. I order the flavors I wanted on my snow cone. A
cold drip of colored ice from the snow cone dripped on my shirt.
I went to go see if any of my friends were at the concert, and I went to take
my baby sister to dance up by the band playing. I danced with her and after a
little bit I took her back to my parents.
I went to get a hot dog with my dad. I went to go sit and eat it. I did not know
where to start. The hot dog was terrific. I had mustard and ketchup rolling down
my shirt.
When the concert was finished, my family and I go down to Sweets, the ice
cream shop. I love going to Market Square’s concerts. They are great.
by: Ashlyn
This event takes place on a hot summer day. I smell hot dogs fresh from
the cart they are covered with ketchup and pickles. I sit down on my blanket
and listen to beautiful music. I see little kids dancing and playing. Then I see all
of my friends we start to play games. Then we all go around the corner to
Sweets and get a big scoop of ice cream. On the way back to our blankets we
decide to play market square tag and that is when you play tag all over market
square. Those were a few reasons why I have the best time at the Concerts on
the Square.

The Beach
One of the best places to go in the summer is the beach, the squishy, warm, gold sand
filling in the cracks between my feet as I walk to the cold refreshing water.
The advantage of going to our beach is that we have a lake by us. This lake is called Lake
Michigan. Lake Forest is a very nice beach with a place for swimming and a spot to sail.
One of my favorite experiences of going to the beach was the summer of 2011. That year I
took a sailing camp.
First I went into the harbor where I got all the supplies ready to build my boat. I put
together my boat and went down to the dock. Now came the dreaded part. We had to drag
our boats down to the dock. The scraping sound sounded like finger nails against the
chalkboard. “Ugg!” the sound of that scraping made me scream in my head.
I tied my boat to the dock as I went to get my life jacket. It’s an ugly pinkish reddish color but
I really didn’t mind.
Now I was ready to sail out of the launch and into the water. You have to be careful because
you didn’t want to hit the rocks on your way out. I was far out in the water, out of sight, very
windy and cold.
The water swayed quietly while I was sailing in a figure eight around the orange weights that
float in the water. I was getting kind of bored and then a gust of wind came and blew my sail.
My sail started to ripple and my boat was speeding away. I started to get out of control and I
was flying all over the place. Another gush of wind came and I had been flipped out of my
boat. I was capsized down in the water.
Our instructor Dennis came to help me back in the boat. We sailed back in the harbor and I
took a break. I was still kind of shocked at what happened, but I thought it was a learning
experience.

One of the best places to go in the summer is the Lake Forest Beach. I
felt the rough rocky sand between my feet while I ran to the cold refreshing
open blue lake. It was a hot steaming summer the last day until school.
It was packed with middle school and elementary school kids I thought I was
going to be lost in crowd. Finally I ran through the crowd and splashed right into
the water with a belly flop. It hurt so much you could see a red mark on my
stomach. So when my mom got snow cones I put it on my stomach. When I
felt better, my friend and I did a whole lot of things like finding fish in the rocks
and searching for sea glass. It was amazing day at the beach.Because the
beach is full of surprises, I look forward to going to it every summer!

4th Of July Parade
Have you been in the 4th of July parade? We have. At the 4th of July
parade, there are a bunch of floats with bands on them and more
stores. They had red, white, and blue flags all around. So, all the floats
go around and do there stuff. Everybody sets up to watch the parade.
Sometimes you can get candy, too.
We have both been on the same float it was for Lino's dad’s shop,
Caputo Cheese Market. We were about 70th in line. The float was a
huge wedge of cheese. We all had to wear Caputo t-shirts, mouse
whiskers and noses, and hats. Some kids wore little mouse ears. Then
we climbed into the cheese wedge and acted like mice. Lino's dad
sponsors a racecar driver, so he had his racecar behind the float. After
the parade, we went to a carnival and play games.
Riding on the float was so much fun. We hope we get to be the float
every year. We love the 4th of July Parade.

Festival and Fireworks
It was the night of 4th of July. I was waiting in the car to go to the Lake
Forest Festival and Fireworks celebration. I was so excited. When we got the
festival we set up our blanket and I went to look around.
First I went to the inflatable moon jump bouncy castle. I climbed in and
stood up. I felt a little shaky until I started jumping. I jumped so high! It is so
much fun. When someone is jumping near you, you can feel the air under the
inflatable floor push you up.
After the bouncy castle, I went to a game to try to squirt water at a small
plastic iceberg. I love playing the games so I ran back to my parents to beg for
a dollar. Once I got the money, I went to an easy game to try to win a prize. I
won a blue stuffed dog!
For dinner we went to the concession stands and got a hot dog. We went
back to our blanket and had dessert. It was yummy pecan pie. Soon the band
began to play. The music was great and lots of people were dancing in front of
the stage.
After the band played its last song, the fireworks began. Then fireworks
made an American flag and a smiley face. There was one that when it exploded
the ones around it exploded too! There were colorful ones and some that
sparkled. The fireworks are always so incredible.
My trip to the Lake Forest Festival and Fireworks was so cool! But the fun
didn’t end there. When we got home we played with sparklers. I can’t wait to
go back next year!

Lake Forest Days
It was a hot summer day in August, and I walked into the Lake Forest Days with my friend
Sophia. We couldn’t wait to go to the Lake Forest Days, because it only happens once a year
for two days. West Park transforms from a typical park to a carnival overnight.
We walked past all the arcade games. Pop! The balloon from the balloon shooting game
popped. I could hear the screams from the people on the “1001 Nights” and “The Chain Saw”.
These are some of the cool scary rides that are set up. “Ok, so what do you want to go on
first?” Sophia asked me. “Um…” I began. “I guess the ferris wheel.” “Sure,” she answered.
We walked towards the line with her babysitter Kaylie. As we walked up Sophia begged,
“Please can we get something to eat?” “Sure.” said Sophia’s babysitter. We walked up to the
man and said, “One funnel cake and one roasted corn.” When he brought the funnel cake out,
I quickly took it and said thank you. As I bit into the funnel cake I tasted the sweet, sugary,
deep fried donut. Yum! Then we walked to the ferris wheel. The line slowly moved forward as
everyone boarded on the ferris wheel. Soon it was our turn. The man opened the door of the
ferris wheel cart and let us in. We talked and laughed the whole ride. When it slowed down we
knew that we would be getting off. When we got off, Sophia asked, “You want to go again?”
“Yeah!” I answered. So we went again and the whole thing repeated.
When got off, Sophia pulled me off toward the “Himalaya”. “No.” I said. “Not happening. Not
going.” “Come on!” Sophia complained. “Its fun!” “Fine.” I said. I didn’t want to have a repeat
of last year when I wouldn’t go on. I seriously don’t know what was wrong with it. I just
somehow didn’t like it. We got into a cart together. It started off really slowly, then got faster
and faster and faster. Then it turned around and started whizzing backwards! It was so fun! I
wished the ride would go longer.
