This book is all you will ever need to know about the incredible inventor, Garrett Morgan. He was responsible for many new inventions but he was also a great activist for the African American community.

I was born on March 4th, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. My mother was of Indiana and African descent, but as for my father, I never got to meet him.

I only went to school until 5th grade! Once I turned 14 I packed up and moved to Cincinnati to look for work.

After a few years there I decided to move to Cleveland. This is were I met my wife and we had 3 children. I ended up staying in Cleveland for the remainder of my life.

After teaching myself all about the sewing machine I found a job as a sewing machine mechanic. My first invention was a belt fastener for sewing machines, I sold it for $50.

By 1901 I had become successful enough to open my own sewing machine repair shop! A couple years later I opened another business, it was a tailoring shop.

One day by accident I discovered a solution that would straighten hair. I tested this solution on my neighbors wiry haired dog and the owner barely recognized him! And that was the invention of my hair product, after that I opened up my own shop to produce it called G.A Morgan Hair Refining Cream Company.
In 1909 I kept going and invented the gas mask. This invention was used heavily in World War I and many engineers, chemists, and working men used my mask to protect them from harmful fumes.

In 1914 I was awarded the First Grand Prize Gold Medal at Second International Exposition of Sanitation and Safety in New York City.
