What is the Chinese New Year?

History of Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year originates from the worshipping activities in China's ancient agrarian society. There was no date set in stone until the Han Dynasty, when Emperor Wudi wanted to use the lunar calendar. There are several different names that festival goes by. Some of those names are Yuanchen, Yuanri, and Yuandan.

The Date Matters
The festival date has been ingrained since Emperor Wudi made the first day of January in the Chinese lunar calendar as the New Year's Day, which is still being used to this day. This has been a nationwide event that involves the government and civil people. After 1949, the festival was listed as a nationwide public holiday and people got to take off work and school.

Customs- New and Old
People would use food, clothes, and harvest as an attribute to the god and ancestors. They would hold ceremonies to pray for blessings and peace at the end of each year (Nian). Another custom is that they would enshrine Kitchen God, Gate God, Joy God, Wealth God, and Well God. New customs arose like burning the bamboo, which is setting off fireworks today. They would also hang peach boards or in todays terms, pasting Spring Couplets.

Traditional Chinese New Year
Traditionally this was the most important festival during the year. The entire household put their attention on this festival. They would clean thoroughly to get rid of the "huiqi" or unlucky breaths that collected throughout the year. They also cleaned their house to appease the gods who would be coming down from heaven to make inspections. Rituals were done where they would sacrifice food and paper icons. Firecrackers would go off to frighten evil spirits. Elders would hand out money to children. The most important aspect of this tradition was the feasting. Family would gather around the table to eat a last course of fish. In the first five days of he New Yea, people would eat long noodles. On the 15th and final day, people would eat round dumplings shaped like the full moon.
