It was October the 4th, and Haiou was very excited. He and his mom were going to the mid-autumn festival that was held every year in Chinatown.
When Haiou and his mom arrived, there were already a lot of people there. People were walking around with moon cakes in their hands. Some were even making colorful lanterns.
Haiou looked up and saw that the moon was full. "That's strange," he thought to himself.
The moon had never been full the last couple years he went to the festival. This caused him to ponder just how long the moon cycle was and when he will be able to see the full moon again.
When Haiou got home, he pulled out his sketchbook and wrote "October 4th, 2017" on the top right hand corner. He then drew a picture of the moon he saw and labeled it "full".
"If I do this everyday, I can keep track of the moon and see how long it takes for a full moon cycle."
It was hard work, but Haiou was determined.

Haiou worked hard to keep track of his records. On one night, he noticed that the moon was "disappearing". A small chunk of it was gone from the sky. He quickly sketched it and put the date "October 7th, 2017" on top. He didn't know what to label this phase, so he asked his mom.
"It's called a gibbous, honey" shouted his mom.
Haiou went back and put the word "gibbous" next to the moon.

On the night of October 12th, Haiou could' see the sky because it was cloudy. He was disappointed because that meant he could record what the moon looked like. He left that day's page blank.
When he went to school the next day, one of Haiou's friend showed him a picture of the moon she drew last night.
"It looked like the moon was cut in half," said the little girl.
When Haiou got home, he took out his sketchbook and drew a half moon on the page he left blank.
By the 15th of October, the moon had large disappeared. Haiou quickly made a sketch of it. He knew that a banana shaped moon was called crescent, so that's what he wrote next to his sketch.

On the 19th, the moon had disappeared completely. Instead of drawing a picture, Haiou wrote "NO MOON" in the center of his sketchbook.
"Maybe I'll see the moon again in a couple days," he thought to himself.
