About the book
Jackson just started first grade. One of the students in his class particularly stood out to him. Her name was Kaylie. Kaylie requires the use of assistive technology and physical assistance. Jackson’s curiosity grew and befriended Kaylie during this process. Jackson discovered that despite their differences, Kaylie is much like himself.

It was the first day of school. Jackson was so excited to be in first grade. “Mom! Dad! I'm going to ride the bus with the big kids!” he exclaimed as he raced onto the school bus.

At school, Jackson excitedly met his classmates and their teacher, Miss Sarah.
“Alright class, welcome to first grade!” said Miss Sarah sweetly. "First grade is going to be so fun!" Jackson cried out as he looked around the room.

Looking around, Jackson noticed a girl sitting at a different chair in the back of the class. Miss Sarah called her Kaylie.

"Ah a wheelchair!" he thought as he remembered his grandma using the same one. Jackson also noticed her special teacher sitting beside her.

As morning class went on, Jackson noticed that the other kids didn't talk to Kaylie. Even at recess, everyone, except Kaylie, was playing with each other on the playground.

Jackson ran up to Kaylie with a big smile. "Hey, I'm Jackson! You're in my class. What are you playing with?!" asked Jackson excitedly.

Jackson decided to go look for Kaylie. He saw Kaylie being pushed around the playground by her special teacher. The funny screen she was holding immediately caught his eye.

Kaylie got startled and turned to her special teacher. The teacher smiled looking at Jackson. Kaylie then pressed a button on her funny screen. The screen loudly talked, "Hello! I'm Kaylie. This is my talking board."

Kaylie's special teacher saw Jackson's puzzled look. "Hi Jackson, I'm Miss Brandy and this is my friend, Kaylie. I help her get around in her wheelchair." She said as she smiled down at Kaylie then back to Jackson.

Jackson's curiosity was ignited, "Miss Brandy, Why does Kaylie use a wheelchair? Why doesn't she talk? Also, what's that funny screen?"
STOP AND THINK
WHAT IS KAYLIE DIAGNOSED WITH?
a) difficulty hearing, uses hearing aid -> hearing loss
b) has trouble moving legs and arms, speech difficulties -> cerebral palsy
c) cannot see far away, wears glasses -> vision loss
Miss Brandy explained, "Kaylie has what is called severe cerebral palsy. This means that her legs aren't as strong as ours so she can't walk on her own. She also has to use her talking board to be able to talk to friends like you."
