I ran through the forest, my pulse rushing and my mind buzzing. My long curly black hair flew out behind me as I jumped over a log. My blue eyes darted around and I paused, panting heavily, but still ready to run again. I looked around me. I had stumbled upon a clearing. A few shafts of sunlight flickered through the canopy of trees. Senses alert, I set off again.

As I hurried through the trees, a sudden eerie howling split the peacefulness of the forest. I froze. Mind racing, I repeated the howling in my head. To my dismay, it sounded close. A dark shape alerted me and I spun around, ready to face it . As I predicted, the creature was a wolf. Hackles raised, it prowled toward me.

Its lips drawn back into a snarl,it eyed me fiercely, but to my surprise I saw a flicker of curiosity too. Instinct told me to run, as I had no chance against a wolf. I pelted through the forest, hearing the unnerving thudding of the wolf's paws as it chased me. Finally I heard the paw steps dying away, and I turned around to look.

"Huff!" I exclaimed as the breath was knocked out of me. The wolf was upon me, glaring down with dark amber eyes. It snarled and rocked on its powerful legs. I stared at it fearfully, suddenly dawning on me that the creatures I studied and protected might bring an end to my life. Struggling pitifully, I tried to throw the wolf off me.

I stopped immediately as it put a paw over my throat. To my surprise, its claws were sheathed. The wolf lept off me and growled. "Follow me."
I was amazed. I could understand it! Following the wolf, I was led through the forest to a clearing in front of a ruin. The wolf howled suddenly, as if calling someone.
