
Bentham and Moral Hazards
Bentham was born in London in 1748, had a law degree by the age of 19 and was a Politically active as a social/political reformer. Bentham had his head removed and mummified as well as his body embalmed when he died.
He defends a theory called utilitarianism. This is when one makes a moral choice based off the theory of promoting pleasure in your life and removing pain. He believed one should make a decision based off of which choice bring more pleasure into your life and the least pain.
If an action produces happiness or whether it produces pain is what determines if the action is right or wrong.
Moral Hazards is a story about a married couple, Cate and Bailey. Cate is 25 years younger than Bailey, and he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Cate ends up having to do everything for Bailey from feeding him to showering him to watching him through the night.
Bailey tells Cate that when his life of living becoming more pain then pleasure that he wants to leave this world while he can still do it himself. Cate puts Bailey in an intensive care home when it become too much for her to do alone. Bailey becomes sick while there twice and is sent to the hospital.
The hospital saves Bailey's life both times going against his DNR. The second time Bailey is in the hospital Cate decides that it is his time to go because he is going downhill fast and he was becoming the person he never wanted to be.
Cate meets with a shady doctor and obtains the drugs needed to end Bailey's life. She puts them in his favorite drink and gives them to him. It takes him 3 days and 2 night to pass away with her by his side.
