I would like to dedicate this book to my 8th grade English Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Drees.

Leila Richardson is a ten-year-old-girl who lives on a farm with her parents and her two sisters in the middle of nowhere. She likes to hang out with her sisters and play with her little puppy, Cocoa. One day, Cocoa and Leila were playing outside when all of a sudden Cocoa started running towards the road.
"Cocoa! Come back!" Leila yelled. Cocoa kept running until Leila couldn't see her anymore. Her eyes started welling up with tears. She had no idea why her sweet little puppy had run away. "Maybe she'll come back," she thought. She walked home and told her parents about what happened.

"Don't worry, sweetheart," said Leila's mother, "I'm sure someone will find Cocoa and bring her back." "I'm sure she'll be alright," Leila's father reassured her. That made Leila feel much better.

A few days went by with no sign of Cocoa. Until one day Leila decided to start searching for Cocoa herself. She told her sisters, Annabelle and Chloe, but not her parents. Leila decided to leave at noon.

Leila packed her bags and started walking. She walked and walked until she heard a strange noise in the bushes. "Cocoa?" said Leila, hoping her precious pup would come prancing from behind a bush. No Cocoa, just a measly squirrel.
