What was the Civil War?
The Civil War was a war between the northern states and the southern states in America. The Civil War was due to the inability of the north and south to agree to abolish or keep slavery.

Inability: Not able
Abolish: To get rid of something.
Slavery in the United States
Slavery was a very popular institution in the early United States. Slavery in the United States started when European traders went to Africa and traded goods for people. These people were enslaved and taken back to America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Slaves were forced to work for no pay, and were often beat, and sometimes killed by their masters.

The North's View on Slavery
Slavery did exist in the north for many years. However, as time went on, there was less need for slaves as the north became more industrialized. Ideas of abolition spread throughout the north, and many people began to protest the idea of slavery. Books like Uncle Tom's Cabin portrayed black people as humans, and not animals, which showed how morally wrong slavery was.

Morally: Whether something is right or wrong.
Abolition: To get rid of & end slavery.
Industrialized: To introduce a lot of factories and companies.
The South's View on Slavery
Slavery was more common and beneficial in the south. The land was more fertile for growing crops, therefore it had many large plantations. Slavery was cheaper than hiring workers, so many plantation owners bought and sold black people as slaves.

Plantation: A large field or plot of land, usually used for farming.
Who was Abraham Lincoln?
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He is well known for writing the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves. However, the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all of the slaves. It only freed enslaved people in the southern confederate states. Abraham Lincoln was not completely for or against slavery, but wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to grant a union victory over the confederates.

Who was the Union & who were the Confederates?
The Union were the northern states that fought to abolish slavery. Abraham Lincoln was on the side of the union. The Confederacy were the northern states that fought to keep slavery. During the Civil War, the Confederacy tried to secede from the union and create their own country.

Who won the Civil War?
In the end, the Union won the Civil War against the Confederates. It is the most deadliest war in U.S. history. The Confederates were forced back into the Union, and had to reconstruct their society and buildings that were destroyed during the war.
