To all the amazing students in Mrs. Keefer's geography classes

When you hear the word Canada several things come to mind- Maple syrup, hockey and Drake. Yes, the artist known as Drake is from Toronto Canada and loves it so much that every song on his album Views makes reference to his beloved Canada. But, Drake will be the first to tell you the reason Canada is so amazing is because of the people.
Canada is located directly north of the United States and is the second largest country in the world. This country is where almost 36 million people call home. With a population this small and a country this large, the population density of Canada is only 9 people per square mile. But because so much of Canada is cold and frozen, ninety percent of the population lives within 100 miles of the US border. Toronto is home to 26% of all Canadians so the city's density is 10, 727 people per square mile.
Canada's population is growing at a very slow rate. The birth rate in Canada is 10.3 births for every 1000 people while the death rate is 8.7 per 1000 people. This means the fertility rate of Canada is only 1.6 per 1000 people or that on average the number of children each woman in Canada will have is two or less. The children that are born usually survive because of the high quality of health care so it isn't surprising the number of babies born who will die before they reach one is only 4.6 out of a 1000. Drake is following this trend of having few children because he is 31 and doesn't have any kids of his own.
So should Drake be worried about having fewer and fewer fans as the population of Canada get's smaller? Not at all! While Canadians have a low fertility rate the country's population is not at Zero Population Growth because the population is actually growing through migration. In 2016, Canada had a migration rate of 5.7 people per 1000 people. This means for every 2 kids a Canadian woman gave birth to, 6 people migrated to the country. Canada has more people immigrate to its country than the United States. Canada encourages this migration because it needs the workers to help support it's people.
