It is 1916. The Great War has engulfed all of Europe: 32 countries, 2 major fronts, the Western front stretching from France to Western Germany. There is fighting in Russia, and the Italian Alps, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to end. About 233 miles from the Western Front, London is panicking to recruit more soldiers. With recruitment posters on cars, signs, and buildings, most sign up willingly but some don’t have much of a choice.

One young man named, Theo, spots one of these military posters in an alleyway, and he takes it home with him. Thinking about all the stories he’s heard, and the people he has seen come back from the war, he signs up as a medic in a hope to help. He begins his training for the next six months. He learns how to dig a trench, fire and reload his rifle in a quick fashion, and bandage and stitch others. During his training he meets a fellow soldier named Alfie, though not a medic they become great friends very quickly. After their thorough but short training, they are transported to the Western front.

They gather their belongings, say their goodbye’s, and promise to their families to return, then they join a line of thousands of soldiers with passage to war torn Belgium. Theo and Alfie still have no idea what the war is like, though their training has prepared them for it. For the Western Front stretches from France all the way to Western Germany, with miles, upon miles of trench lines. Once the boat arrives in Belgium everything changes, the sky is a dark grey, with sounds of gunshots, explosions, and screaming. Families flee from the nearby villages in a hope to escape the fighting. Theo, and Alfie’s battalion enters the path to the trenches, through the worlds until they reach a clearing.

The Western Front, they walk to the trenches guarded behind a few trees to the support trench, a little bit behind from the front lines. It’s quiet here though there are sounds of explosions in the distance. The support trench is wide trench line that is more safe then the front lines where the main fighting happens. It is late now, and dinner is being served, tea to help sleep, and some biscuits to just barely fill your stomach. It’s hard to sleep considering the noise and terror coming from the front lines, where Theo and Alfie’s battalion will be tomorrow. In the morning, everyone wakes, has a cup of coffee, and some oatmeal, and prepares everything they need for the front lines. Theo, prepares his trench kit which includes a uniform, helmet, gas mask, combat knife, ammo, rifle, and medical supplies.

The Commander of the battalion leads them quickly to the Front Lines. Many soldiers already scared to death. As soon as he enters, Theo is immediately patching up wounded soldiers. Alfie goes to his position with the other soldiers, waiting for enemy fire. One of them says, "You picked an awful day to join the front lines, today we go over the top." Now Alfie realizes why the others are scared to death

The soldier was right, and in just a few minutes, the commander ordered everyone to get ready. Theo readied his medical supplies, and got next to Alfie. Theo looked at Alfie and asked "You ready?" "I guess" Alfie responded. The commander looked over the trench and blew the whistle. "Let's go" he yelled. The whole trench began the shout and scream, soldiers climbed the ladders into No Man's Land, and causos began.
