Hester is released from prison. she is free to leave Boston, but she chooses not to. She livesin an abandoned cabin on a patch of infertile land at the edge of town. Hester remains secluded from everyone, including the town fathers, respected women, beggars, children, and even strangers.

The town people seen pearl as a devils spawn, an outcast, emblem and product of sin, she had no right among christened infants. The towns people didn't like their kids around pearl.

Hester pays a visit to Governor Bellingham’s mansion. She went there for two reasons. One was to deliver a pair of gloves she has made for the governor. as well to find out if there is any truth to the rumors that Pearl who is now three years old, may be taken from her.

Bellingham, Wilson, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale enter the room. They notice Pearl and begin to tease her by calling her a bird and a demon-child. then Wilson tests the three year old by asking questions about god. Pearl responds with "I have no Heavenly Father". Dimmesdale then talks the group of men to let Hester keep her daughter pearl.

Chillingworth has a hidden past that no-one knows and they believe he is a doctor. The town refers the doctor as a leach. They tell Chillingworth to live with Dimmesdale and care for him because he has been sick lately.
Chillingworth continually seeks to find the reason for his patient’s illness. Chillingworth really wants to know the details of Dimmesdale’s life, but Dimmesdale has grown suspicious of everyone and wont open up to anyone.

Chillingworth continues to play mind games with Dimmesdale, making his revenge as terrible as possible. The minister often regards his doctor with distrust. he dismisses his feelings and continues to suffer.

As Dimmesdale stands upon the scaffold, his mind turns to bad thoughts. He almost laughs when he sees Reverend Wilson, and in his delirium he thinks that he calls out to the older minister.
Seven years have passed since Pearl’s birth. Hester has become more active in society. She brings food to the doors of the poor. she nurses the sick. she is a source of aid in times of trouble.
Hester asks Chillingworth to stop tormenting the minister. One day she and Pearl encounter him near the beach, gathering plants for his medicines.
