To my mom, Dawn Zaske, who never knew her other son. May she rest in peace.

My name was Theresa, I was only a small child when I was told who I was supposed to be. I was supposed to like pink, barbies, and hate cars and dirt.

But I liked everything! I liked playing with bunnies and cars, I liked playing in the mud and catching worms. My dad got mad, cause "girls shouldn't do" certain things.

I liked wearing dresses and skirts, but I also like jeans and shorts. I liked "boys clothes" and "girl's clothes." I liked playing football and playing house.

As I grew, I felt more isolated and alone. I thought it was wrong to "be like a boy" because I was told I'm a girl and that I should act like one. So, I took a big leap. I wanted to be the real me.

I cut my hair and went by the name of my choice. I was so happy to express who I really am! I looked more like me instead of who others want me to be. I let Nick be free.

But it came with hurtful words. Not everybody wanted me to be me. They didn't want Nick, they wanted Theresa. I was to choose to lie or be true to myself.
