Why do we have a skeleton?
Cranium~
Our Skeletal system has many important functions. Without our skeletal system we would not be able to stand, or move at all because our muscles are attached to our skeletal system which allows us to move. We also have something inside our bones called bone marrow. Red Bone marrow makes red blood cells while Yellow bone marrow makes white blood cells and stores triglycerides. Bones not only provide support, they also protect our important internal organ, such as the cranium protecting the brain and the thoracic cage protecting our cardiovascular system.

What are Bones made of?
Bones as well as other parts of your body are made of small building blocks called cells. There are four types of cells that make up your bones. They are osteocytes, osteoblasts, osteogenic cells and osteoclasts. They each do different jobs to build up the bone and keep it strong and working properly. There are two types of bone, spongy bone and compact bone. Spongy bone contains red bone marrow and is found at the end of long bones. Spongy bone is not as durable as compact bone. Compact bone is denser than spongy bone. Compact bone are typically in the middle area of limbs and allows for support. Compact bone contains yellow marrow.

Ossification
Ossification is the process by which more bone matter is created or remodeled by cells called osteoblasts. This usually occurs mostly in healing fractures or growing children however there are some disorders that cause unregulated ossification. Calcium helps bones ossify and remain strong. Your bones are the largest storage site for calcium in your body.
