In loving memory of my boy, Tonto.

I feel strange every time I go to the woods," remarked Susie to her little sister. "I feel sort of light and magical."
Her sister Jacie snorted. "Light and magical," she said with a grin. "Ha ha. Well I'll tell you how I feel: scared. I hate those woods."
Susie closed the book she had on her lap with a loud thump. "Fine then, don't listen to me, but that doesn't change how I feel when I enter those woods."
Jacie rolled her eyes. "It's Longhorn forest Susie. It's not supposed to feel normal. It's the second largest forest in England."
"I know that," said Susie. "But that doesn't mean that something is not wrong with that place. I plan on staying away for good."
Susie dreamed of a tornado of leaves swirling about her. When it passed, she was wearing a fine dress made of leaves.
Susie rose to her feet after a weird night's sleep. She turns to her mirror, half expecting to see the dress she dreamed about. Only she looked just as normal as usual.
Susie spent the day baking with her mother. But she couldn't shake how real that dream felt last night. "Mom," she began casually, "have you ever known anyone to get lost in Longhorn forest?"
Her mother Jill considered this. "Well, there was this boy who once got lost for over a year. When he finally came out of the forest he was telling people about all these magical creatures that he saw, creatures that helped keep him alive."
Susie considered this with a "hmm".
That night, Susie laid down to sleep and quickly drifted off. As she fell deeper into sleep, she began to dream. All of a sudden a little fairy with a bright purple hat shaped like a toadstool began talking to her.
"We need you," said the fairy. "Things are not well since our Queen was banished to a faraway place. Come and see. Your ring awaits you."
Then Susie began to have another dream. In this dream, she saw a group of fairies talking quickly to each other. She managed to make out one thing, her name.
Susie got up the next morning feeling rather strange, like she was transported to a strange faraway place.
Jacie met her with a half smile. "You do realize you snored all night."
Susie blinked. "Oh, well, sorry."
Jacie shook her head and left the room. But suddenly Susie's thoughts drifted back to last night's dreams. She knew she needed to go to the woods.
And so she did.
Susie entered Longhorn forest just after lunch. She wanted a full belly before she began investigating.
As she walked deeper into the forest, she began to hear strange sounds. One of them, a dying shriek made the hair on her neck stand on end.
After walking for what felt like hours, she finally came to the end of the path that her dad made last year. Her family, the Clephans owned a large portion of the forest and so her dad often went into the forest. But she only ever entered the forest with him one time.
