Our family when we first got to own our bakery back in May of 1924! I am the one on the far left.

This is the street where we bought our first home back in late May of 1924. New York was a very busy place!

This picture was just a small part of our family! I was on the left, and my sister was on the far right. In the middle we have my mother and her sister as well. In the front is my 8 year old daughter, Dorothy. My sister moved out west in 1923.

In 1929, we got a new president, Herbert Hoover!
Things appeared to be going well. We were so excited for what we thought Hoover was going to do.

Soon after however, on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday, the stock market crashed.
My husband, Walter, waited in line for hours to retrieve what little savings we had left, only to come back empty handed.

We were lucky to keep our bakery, but we had to move into one of the nearby Hoovervilles.
Many soup kitchens popped up all over New York. They became as common as the people living on the streets. When we were at our worst, this is how we ate.
We saw this disaster coming. Easy credit, the Dust Bowl, and the overproduction of goods all led to this catastrophe. We were fortunate compared to many others however. This was one of the advertisements near our old apartment.

By January 1930, our bakery was dwindling on the edge. We sold bread for 10 cents a loaf just to make any profits.
Walter and his friend had to search for new jobs and better sources of income so we could hopefully find a better house and move out of this slum.
I decided to call my sister, Rose, who lived out west in Tennessee to see how she was doing and how the rest of her family was holding up. She had said my niece, Bertha, had been coughing nonstop lately because of the dust. Fortunately my daughter, Dorothy, was safer here in New York.

Rose sent me this picture of the worst storm she had seen so far. I could never imagine being in her situation. Many of her neighbors had lost their farms or moved to the city.
Reelection was coming up soon and we were hopeful to have a new candidate that could fix the economy. I really liked this comic posted in the New York Times!

After no luck finding a job, my husband went to Washington D.C. to attempt to cash his bonus check early.
Hoover ordered to have all of the veterans removed by force. It was time for a change from the man that caused the depression.

After years of struggling to make ends meet, a president who stood for the people was elected!
We were excited for much needed change and his New Deal programs he promised!

Roosevelt gave us many new opportunities for employment! My husband waiting in line to fill out paperwork for the Works Progress Administration. He was hoping to find work in construction.

One of my favorite chocolate ads from the New York Times! Roosevelt's new Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act forced companies to reveal their ingredients on the package.

Roosevelt also created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation! We were finally willing to put our money back into the banks after what they had done previously.
